TULSA — The Tulsa women’s basketball team will face seven postseason teams, including two NCAA and five Women’s National Invitation Tournament participants, as part of its 2023-24 American Athletic Conference schedule, the league announced Friday.
The 18-game slate features two games each against five opponents — Rice, South Florida, Temple, Tulane and Wichita State — and the other league opponents once. Among its seven 2023 postseason opponents, the Golden Hurricane will play a total of 11 contests against that group — NCAA participant South Florida and WNIT teams Tulane, Rice and Wichita State twice, while facing East Carolina (NCAA) and WNIT participants Memphis and Southern Methodist University once each.
After closing out the non-conference schedule 10 days earlier, the Tulsa women’s basketball team will open the American Athletic Conference season against the Memphis Tigers on Dec. 30. Memphis is coming off a 22-11 overall record and a second-place 11-4 mark in the AAC. Tulsa has won three of the five meetings against the Tigers during TU women’s coach Angie Nelp’s tenure.
Tulsa opens the new year on Jan. 2 with its first of two straight home games as the Hurricane hosts Tulane (Jan. 2) and Temple (Jan. 6) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Tulsa’s second league road game comes against last year’s American Athletic Conference regular season champion South Florida on Jan. 10. The Bulls posted an overall 27-7 mark in 2022-23 and a 15-1 record in conference play. Three days later, Tulsa travels across the state from Tampa to Boca Raton to play league newcomer Florida Atlantic (Jan. 13).
Another two-game homestand follows the Florida road trip as the Hurricane hosts Wichita State (Jan. 20) and Rice (Jan. 24).
Tulsa has won four of the last five meetings against the Shockers and will meet the Owls for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign when the two teams were members together in Conference USA.
Tulsa closes out the month of January with a road game at league newcomer North Carolina-Charlotte (Jan. 27) in the third meeting between the two schools. The Hurricane stays in the state of North Carolina to begin the month of February with a Feb. 1 game at defending AAC Tournament Champion East Carolina. The Pirates placed third in The American last year with an 11-5 league record and an overall 23-10 mark.
The Hurricane defeated ECU by a score of 55-47 in last year’s only meeting between the two teams.
Conference newcomer North Texas comes to Tulsa on Feb. 4, for the only meeting this season between the two teams. The Hurricane and Mean Green last met in the 2022 WNIT First Round as Tulsa claimed a 75-62 road win.
Tulsa visits Rice on Feb. 10 in the second meeting of the season between the two schools. A home game with Texas-San Antonio (Feb. 14), the only game scheduled between the two teams this year, is sandwiched between the Rice game and a road contest at Wichita State (Feb. 17).
Tulsa and UTSA have played 10 times previously with the Hurricane holding a 6-4 series lead.
Two straight road games come against league newcomer Alabama-Birmingham (Feb. 21) and AAC powerhouse USF (Feb. 25). It’s the only meeting between Tulsa and UAB this year and the second of the two games against USF.
A road game at Temple closes out the month of February (Feb.28), while the Hurricane host SMU for the only meeting of the season in Tulsa’s home finale on March 2. Tulsa closes out the regular season with a trip to New Orleans against Tulane (Mar. 5).
Game times and television designations will be announced at a later date.
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be played March 9-13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
