Warriors begin Dist. B-5 play tonight at Dewar

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Webbers Falls Warriors, fresh off their bye week, will not only return to action tonight but will begin their District B-5 portion of their season with a 7 p.m. road game against the Dewar Dragons.

The Webbers Falls Warriors, fresh off their bye week, will not only return to action tonight but will begin their District B-5 portion of their season with a 7 p.m. road game against the Dewar Dragons.

One of the biggest things the Warriors (5-0) used the bye week for was to get themselves ready to face the Dragons (5-0) not at full strength tonight. Three players will miss tonight’s game due to being ejected two weeks ago in the Cave Springs game.

“We’ve put some stuff in,” Webbers Falls coach Trent Holt said. “It’s one thing to put stuff in, and it’s another thing to run it. They (the Dragons) are very good. They’re physical and tough. We’re going to play a little bit different defense because our two linebackers are gone. We’re going to have to play really well to beat them. We’re going to show up there and play hard. We’ll try to do the stuff we’re working on.”

The Dragons are coming in with a 52-6 win over Cherokee in the season opener, followed by a 60-0 road win against Snyder, a 58-8 victory over Depew, a 52-0 road victory over Arkoma and last week’s 52-40 win over Velma-Alma. So far this season, the Dragons have outscored their opponents 274-54, with the V-A Comets scoring the most points anyone has this season on Dewar.

“On offense, their tailback is very good,” Holt said. “The quarterback can throw the ball OK, but he can run. Defensively, their front five are good. Their nose guard, two (defensive) ends and their linebackers are solid. They’re good, and that’s what makes them special.”

With the most important games of the season now here, Holt said opening district play with the road upset of the Dragons would be huge.

“It would definitely be an upset,” he said. “If we can get this one, plus two more and get one of the other two, we can be in line for first or second place.”

The Warriors couldn’t be entering tonight’s district opener in any better way than undefeated to this point in the season.

“We’ve won every game we’ve played,” Holt said. “I hope we think we can go up there and win. You never know. If you play as good as you can, and get two or three breaks, you never know what can happen.”
