Arkansas women win at home over Georgia, but upset by Auburn

By FULLER BIRCH ARKANSASRAZORBACKS.COM

The sixth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks (9-2-1 overall, 5-0-0 in Southeastern Conference play) netted two goals in the second half to take down Georgia 2-1 on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. The victory extended Arkansas’ win streak to six matches and its home unbeaten streak to 28 matches, dating back to 2021.

However, the Hogs were then upset 2-1 by the host Auburn Tigers on Sunday in Auburn, Ala. Arkansas came into the match riding a six-match win streak, and a nine-match win streak against Auburn which dated back to 2016.

In the win over Georgia, Arkansas dominated possession against a strong defensive effort from the Bulldogs in the first 45 minutes. Though held scoreless, the Razorbacks had a 7-0 edge in shots and 5-0 corner kick advantage.

The Hogs scored two goals in three minutes to open the second half. In the 58th minute of play, a foul committed by Bulldog midfielder Millie Filson set up a free kick for defender Emilee Hauser. Hauser sent the ball into the 18-yard box where Kiley Dulaney missed the initial header but cleaned it up with a powerful shot into the upper right corner of the net.

Senior Ava Tankersley netted her second game-winning goal in as many matches after forward Anna Podojil flicked a header up to Tankersley who was speeding past the Georgia defense.

Freshman goalkeeper Phoebe Carver started her fourth straight match but ended her shutout streak with an own goal in the 73rd minute.

In the loss to Auburn, an early thirdminute foul by Dulaney gave the Tigers a dangerous free kick from outside the penalty box. Auburn midfielder Anna Haddock’s kick slipped between the wall of defenders past Carver to take the early lead.

The Hogs were held to two shots in the first half and had a stretch of 44 shotless minutes between the two halves.

Junior goalkeeper Sierra Cota-Yarde started the second half for Arkansas, her first appearance since returning from Portuguese National Team duties in September.

Arkansas leveled the match eight minutes out of the break with Tankersley’s third goal in as many matches. Podojil crossed a ball that was headed twice by Morgan White before Tankersley shot across the ground with her left foot. She now ranks third on the team with four goals this season.

The Tigers retook the lead in the 60th minute with a right-footed banger from midfielder Sydnie Thibodaux.

Auburn finished the match ahead in shots 12-10.

The Razorbacks were slated to return home to face Florida (5-4-4, 1-3-2 SEC) on Thursday.
