Sallisaw FCCLA year off to a great start

By BY STEPHANIE BENNETT

Members of the Sallisaw Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America were excited to get the 2023-24 school year off to a great start. All students in Stephanie Bennett’s Family and Consumer Science courses are members of the Sallisaw Chapter: developing skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

Members of the Sallisaw Family, Career and Community Leaders of America were excited to get the 2023-24 school year off to a great start. All students in Stephanie Bennett’s Family and Consumer Science courses are members of the Sallisaw Chapter, where members focus on developing skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

Amongst their large membership, the Black Diamond FCCLA consist of six officers, hospitality, community service and competition teams as well. Officers include President Hannah Brake, Vice President Adrianna Allen and officers Jocelyn Coffman, Ruby Allen, Miriam Burmaster and 8th grade representative Taylor Archuleta.

“Being an officer this year has really encouraged me to make sure I’m always trying my best to help those in need, encouraging, and a leader. I love being involved in my chapter and hope to one day take it to the next level,” Adrianna Allen says.

The fall semester started off with the LEAD Conference in Glenpool, where chapter officers from the Northeast Region took part in leadership workshops. Hannah Brake also holds the position as First Vice President of Community Service for Northeast District Five. She has excelled in her duties as a Chapter and District Officer, planning for the NE5 District Leadership Conference held on October 10th in Tahlequah. Numerous NE5 chapters attended an amazing event filled with fun and inspiring words of wisdom from keynote speakers and FCCLA leaders.

Hannah Brake was busy at work for Oklahoma FCCLA as a State Voting Delegate when attending the National Leadership Conference last July in Denver. In the previous spring semester, Hannah won 3rd place at State for her Fashion Construction project. Hannah’s dress project caught the attention of the National FCCLA Fashion Show Board. She was selected as a Top 40 Semifinalist for the fashion show when attendance.

Community service and school engagement are important factors that make up the heart of Sallisaw FCCLA. They were more than happy teaming up with the Sallisaw BPA Chapter during the homecoming parade and hosting their first Fall Festival. Several high school clubs/sports teams were also there to help in the success of this event. FCCLA’s hospitality team made cupcakes for the festival’s cake walk, and plans are underway for next year.

As the semester moves forward into the holiday season, Sallisaw FCCLA are making plans for several service projects benefiting those in our community, surrounding areas, state, and beyond. You can find the officer team next in the community dressed up as different Barbie characters. They will be handing out candy and wishing the children of Sallisaw a Happy Halloween during Halloween on Elm.

Be sure to check out their pages on Facebook, Sallisaw FCCLA, and Black Diamond Designs by FCCLA. Students in Mrs. Bennett’s Fashion and Interior Design classes are having fun creating custom buttons, repurposed items and more. You can find their booth at all home football games.
