STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State men’s basketball team was picked 10th in the 2023-24 Big 12 Preseason Poll, released Friday by the conference office.
Each of the league’s 14 coaches submitted a ballot. They were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
Defending champion Kansas led the way with 168 points and earned 12 first-place votes. Newcomer Houston (153 points) topped the other two ballots on its way to second place.
The Cowboys reeled in 57 points to finish ahead of Cincinnati (55), Oklahoma (54), Brigham Young University (29) and Central Florida (14).
Spots 3-9 went to Texas (143), Baylor (137), Texas Christian University (113), Kansas State (106), Iowa State (95), Texas Tech (80) and West Virginia (70).
OSU (20-16, 8-10 last year) has won at least eight league games in each of the last three seasons.
Seventh-year coach Mike Boynton Jr. will lean on a pair of veteran guards in Bryce Thompson (last year’s leading scorer at 11.2 points per game) and John-Michael Wright (9.8 ppg) while working to get nine talented newcomers up to speed. The Cowboys’ freshman class has been ranked as high as seventh nationally, headlined by McDonald’s All-American Brandon Garrison and Team USA U19 standout Eric Dailey Jr.
The Cowboys welcome Oklahoma Baptist University for an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at Gallagher-Iba Arena before opening the regular season against Abilene Christian University at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at GIA.
