STILLWATER – Alex Morris’s goal in the 83rd minute lifted the Oklahoma State Cowgirls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Bedlam-rival Oklahoma on Monday night in front of 3,016 fans at Neal Patterson Stadium, which marked the second-highest attendance in program history.
With the win, the Cowgirls snapped a five-game skid and ended the regular season with a 12-7-0 record. OSU finished 5-5-0 in the Big 12 and will open play at the Big 12 Soccer Championship as the No. 7 seed on Saturday in Round Rock, Texas, where it will again face OU (7-9-2, 3-5-2).
The victory also saw OSU extend its unbeaten streak against the Sooners to nine (7-0-2), and the Cowgirls are now 31-9-5 all time against OU.
OSU entered the match having not scored a goal in its previous five matches, and the Cowgirls failed to score on their first 11 shots against the Sooners.
However, Morris would put an end to the drought at the 82:51 mark when she took a pass from Xcaret Pineda and blasted a 30-yard shot over the outstretched arms of OU goalie Olivia Ramey. The goal was Morris’s second of the season, while Pineda notched her fifth assist.
The goal would hold up as Grace Gordon recorded a save on the final play of the game to secure the win. Gordon had six saves on the night en route to posting her sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams tallied 12 shots in the match, with OSU owning an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
