MULDROW FOOTBALL

Bulldogs wrap up 2023 football season tonight at Lincoln Christian

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

While the Muldrow Bulldogs came up short in winning last Friday’s Senior Night game against Locust Grove, coach Logan Coatney was proud of how his players fought back from being 20 points down to get within a score.

While the Muldrow Bulldogs came up short in winning last Friday’s Senior Night game against Locust Grove, coach Logan Coatney was proud of how his players fought back from being 20 points down to get within a score.

“I think our guys played hard,” he said. “Our guys didn’t execute at times when we needed to, but I saw a lot of growth in the execution department. Obviously, we’re not where we need to be at this point in the year. I was proud of the kids. We gave ourselves a chance to be in the ball game — and I’m proud of them for that. We’re hoping to take a little bit of that execution, drive and effort into this week’s game against Lincoln Christian.”

It will be a battle of Bulldogs at 7 tonight when Muldrow visits Tulsa to meet Lincoln Christian.

Muldrow’s Bulldogs (1-8 overall, 0-5 in District 3A-3 play) will look to end their sevengame losing streak, which if accomplished would mean they would end their season by winning their final game.

“It’s an unfortunate positive for us,” Coatney said. “Everybody wants to make the playoffs and go and compete late into the postseason. We have an opportunity to go and win our last game just due to the fact of where we’re at (not being a playoff team). Our kids understand that. It’s unfortunate, but our kids have bought into what we’re trying to do offensively and defensively. We’re going to be returning a larger half of the guys we’ve been playing. Our kids have bought in for the long-term success and getting to where we need to be. They know we’re not there yet. We have a chance to end the 2023 season on a win. We just have to go execute.”

Lincoln Christian’s Bulldogs (8–0, 4-0) are the lone undefeated team in the district, and there’s nothing more than Coatney’s squad would like to do than hand the host team its first loss of the season.

“We talked to our kids,” he said. “It’s already been a topic of discussion. We have an opportunity that’s before us. We understand and know that Lincoln Christian is a good football team, and have been for years now. They are not going to be fighting the way we’re going to be fighting. They’re already in the playoffs. We’re not going to make the playoffs. It’s all about how we want to go out and how we want to end the season. We had a great week of practice … now, we just have to go execute.”

Lincoln Christian’s team will be the best team Muldrow will have played so far this season.

“They’re good,” Coatney said. “They do a lot of things offensively. They formation you. Just about every play, you’re going to see something different. We know they’re going to do quite a bit. They have some really good athletes on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they play with absolute great effort. They fly to the football and rally to make sure tackles. They’re well coached and disciplined in what they do. They’re going to want to come out and keep their perfect season rocking.”

Coatney said his team will need to play its best game so far this season, and put four full quarters of football t o g e t h e r , to give the Bulldogs a chance to pull off the upset.

“We’re going to have to come out and execute and play the best we’ve played all year,” he said.
