Charlie Brown of the Akins community may not have a dog named Snoopy, but he does own a cat, one he and his wife adopted recently, through “Barking for a Cause,” he said.
A retired U.S. Air Force serviceman, Brown is supportive of Barking for a Cause, and will be busy this weekend helping with a fundraiser for the animal rescue organization which will be held at VFW Post 4518 in Sallisaw.
“There’ll be all kinds of things going on. A pet costume contest will be held through the Barking for a Cause Facebook page, and a $5 lunch with tacos, nachos and kids can eat free,” Brown said.
There will also be a silent auction at 2:30 p.m. and 50/50 drawings. Brown said kids will receive gift bags and there will be a bouncy house available also.
“We’re hosting the event and providing the location, but the fundraiser will actually be sponsored by Barking for a Cause in Muldrow,” he said.
“The funds are used to get the animals spayed and neutered with the ultimate goal of getting the animal adopted by a veteran or anyone else who will provide a home for the animal,” he said.
Brown, 55, served 25 years in the Air Force, retiring in December 2010. During his time in the service he did department contract work and was a crew chief on A10, F16 and F15 air crafts. After retiring he has also worked for the Blue Air Training in aviation and close air support training.
“They’re located in Fort Smith, Ark. I stay in contact with them. My wife and I also have a business ‘SC Brown Health Co’ in which we provide legal documentation for health-related purposes, and I also do excavation work on the side,” he said.
Together, the couple has eight children and 21 grandchildren.
Brown said he enjoys living in Sequoyah County.
“I was born in Cameron. I met my wife 14 years ago. She was getting ready to retire from her job and I was retired. We got married and moved here. I call Sequoyah County my home now. It’s a beautiful county and the community works to keep it clean. The people are nice and I enjoy talking to all the veterans at the VFW. I wish there was a way to get all their stories out there because we have service men who have served in Iraq and Vietnam, and they have some interesting stories to tell,” he said.
Brown serves on the House Committee for the post as well as the Assistant Quarter Master. He has also served as commander and the adjutant for the post.
“I’ve just served in several offices. Whatever they elect me to do,” he said.
He is also one of a few Legacy Lifetime members.
“That means after I’m no longer here, the post will continue to receive my membership dues,” he said.
“We just invite everyone to come out and help raise money for Barking for a Cause. We think it’s a great organization. There might be some puppies and kittens there at the post Saturday to be adopted.”
The Barking for a Cause fundraiser will be held from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 4518 located at 104332 U.S. 59 in Sallisaw. Photos for the Pet Costume contest will be judged by the public at that time, Brown said.
