Grizzlies in must-win situation tonight at Foyil

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Gans Grizzlies are in a must-win situation tonight when they visit the Foyil Panthers in a District B-6 contest at 7 tonight.

The Gans Grizzlies are in a must-win situation tonight when they visit the Foyil Panthers in a District B-6 contest at 7 tonight.

The Grizzlies (2-6 overall, 0-3 in district play) have lost three straight district games since winning back-toback non-district contests. If they hope to get into the Class B playoff picture, the Grizzlies need to win tonight and next week’s Senior Night game against Keota.

“This game is definitely the season for us,” Gans coach Brian Morton said. “Foyil beat Arkoma, but we felt like we were better than Arkoma. Offensively, we have to get things going. We definitely have to win these next two games. We’ve dug our own hole. Now, we’ve got to step up and try to finish strong. I still have some good boys, and I think they’re going to step up. They’re not going to roll over on us. I know they’re going to try to finish strong. They’ve been working as hard as they can.”

The Panthers (3-5, 1-2) lost last week 58-12 to the Welch Wildcats after they blanked the Arkoma Mustangs 21-0 the week before. Last week, Mustangs defeated the Grizzlies 30-14. Foyil’s other wins came on zero week — 22-12 over Claremore Christian — and 34-16 over South Coffeyville on Sept. 14.

Morton said there’s one player who makes the Panthers go.

“They have a good running quarterback,” he said. “We’re going to have to try to contain him.”

Morton said the Grizzlies’ defensive ends will need to have a strong game as well as the entire offensive unit.

“We’re definitely going to have to have our (defensive) ends step up and keep people from getting outside us,” he said. “I feel like offensively, we have to throw the ball better. I don’t think we’re throwing the ball as good as we could be. Part of that is our receivers need to run stronger routes. We’re struggling so much offensively that the offense we’re having to come up with is just too predictable right now. The things I felt like we did well early, we’re just not successful with the run now.”
