BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Oral Roberts women’s soccer team fell to South Dakota State 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in the Summit League Championship semifiinals.

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Oral Roberts women’s soccer team fell to South Dakota State 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in the Summit League Championship semifiinals.

ORU opened up the scoring quicky in the first half. In the fifth minute, senior Kennedy Langebartels rebounded a shot by Luci Rodriguez and fired it into the back of the net to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.

SDSU quickly responded and ramped up their offensive attack. From the 19th-29th minutes, the Jackrabbits (12-3-3) would score three goals to tip the scales in their favor. ORU would go into the break down 3-1.

In the 48th and 49th minute of the second half, SDSU would tag on two more goals.

With 21 minutes remaining in the match, freshman Carys Torgesen would cut into the lead as she scored off the assist from Ariana Fresquez, making it 5-2 in favor of the Jackrabbis. This was Torgesen’s first goal of her career.

The score remained 5-2 for the rest of the game as South Dakota State came away with the win and advanced the Summit League Championship match.

The Golden Eagles (8-7-4) defeated the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

With a temperature of 26 degrees at kickoff and wind gusts at 19 miles per hour, both teams had to battle through freezing conditions throughout the entirety of the match.

ORU came firing out of the gate, taking five shots by four different players within the first 13 minutes.

In the 16th minute, Samantha Guzman made her way deep inside the box and crossed a pass through the middle of the box. UMKC blundered the clear out as one of the Roo defender scored on their own goal to give ORU a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles held onto the lead for 38 seconds before Brianna Castleberry dumped off a pass to Madison Page who evened the score 1-all.

The Roos (3-7-8) would have another great look at the goal in the 24th minute after an ORU foul inside of the box. UMKC forward Caijah Anderson would take the penalty kick, but sent it wide left.

Ten minutes later, freshman Abigail Hoffman collected the rebound off an ORU corner kick and shot a rocket from outside the box that landed just outside the keeper’s hand to make it 2-1 Golden Eagles.

The score would stay at 2-1 for the remainder of the half after a hot offensive start for ORU.

The second half became a much more possession based game for the Golden Eagles as the Roos tried whatever they could to breakthrough and tie the match.

ORU remained calm and collected under the pressure as they defended the UMKC attack.

The Golden Eagles held onto the lead for the rest of the match as they earned a hard fought quarterfinals win.
