Legacy Account upsets favorite Power Slam to win at Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY — Legacy Account took advantage of 1-9 favorite Power Slam trying to bear out nearly the entire 5.5-furlongs race Wednesday night at Remington Park, winning the featured allowance race over the odds-on choice by the public.

Power Slam, a 2-year-old gelding by Dialed In, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Bristles, had run third, beaten 3.25 lengths in the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes on Sept. 24 at Remington Park and then was the runner-up on Oct. 20 in the $76,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile for Oklahoma-breds, losing by 2.75 lengths to Boom Baby Flats. Logically, with the drop in class to allowance-non-winnersof- two races, it should have been easy pickings for the favorite. Legacy Account, with Obed Sanchez up, had credentials of his own to boast.

Trainer Durk Peery had sent this juvenile gelded son of Den’s Legacy, out of the Liquor Cabinet (IRE) mare Liquor Account, only twice and the two races were as polar opposite as you can get. In the gelding’s first maiden try at five furlongs, he ran ninth, beaten 55 lengths and was eased after never getting a sniff of the lead. He came back in his second race at five furlongs and immediately broke on top and never looked back, winning by 3.5 lengths at longshot odds of 50-1. Legacy Account did the same thing Wednesday night, going straight to the front. When Power Slam came to him turning for home, that heavy favorite kept trying to blow the turn, pulling his head to the right. Legacy Account dug in while jockey Lindey Wade continued to wrestle with Power Slam down the stretch. In the end, Legacy Account went off at 9-2 odds and won by 4.5 lengths. Cielo’s Knight (7-1) checked in third another eight lengths back of the runnerup. The winner paid $11.40 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show.

Legacy Account won $21,000 for owner Silver Wings Ranch (Jack Cunningham) of Muskogee, Okla., from the $35,000 purse and improved to two wins in three starts for a bankroll of $41,128. He was bred in Oklahoma by his owner.

Fuentes Riding Triple: Jockey Luis Fuentes took advantage of trainer Steve Asmussen’s first-call rider Stewart Elliott being gone Wednesday night and had a triple-bagger in the saddle, two of those for the leading trainer. Fuentes’ other victory was for trainer Francisco Bravo.

Fuentes’ three trips to the winner’s circle came early on the card as he was victorious in three of the first five races, including both halves of the early Daily Double. Fuentes was aboard the 6-5 favorite for Asmussen in the first race and Pure Connection ($4.60 to win) held on by a half-length. That 2-year-old filly by Connect, out of the Sky Mesa mare Carinhosa, broke her maiden with the win in her fifth try, this time with $10,000 claimers at six furlongs. Pure Connection is owned and bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm.

Fuentes’ second win in the second race was in the saddle of Nordic Queen ($9.40) on the rail as that 4-year-old filly by Read the Footnotes, out of the Ghostzapper mare Awesome Emma, was returning to her preferred venue of racing around two turns on the dirt. At Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, she had finished first and second in route races before deviating in her last two tries at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, moving to the grass and then sprinting in her first start at Remington Park this meet. This winner was for Bravo and owner Michael Grossman of Fredericksburg, Texas. Fuentes even changed Nordic Queen’s running style coming from ninth to blast down the stretch with a late kick. In her route races at WRD, she was never worse than second at any point in either of those races. Nordic Queen, bred in Minnesota by Eureka Thoroughbred Farm, was sent off at 7-2 odds on Wednesday. This race was for 3-year-old and older fillies and mares, going one mile, who had not won two career races.

Fuentes’ third win on the night came in the fifth race as he won his second for Asmussen, the all-time winningest trainer in the history of North American racing. He booted home Jalen Journey ($3.60) at 4-5 odds. This was a starter allowance race for 3-year-olds and older who had started for a $5,000 claiming price in their last three starts. They were racing six furlongs. Asmussen also owns this 8-year-old ridgling by With Distinction, out of the Congrats mare Petunia Face. He was bred in Florida by Dennis Foster and Edward Pendray.

Remington Park racing continues tonight and Saturday night. The first post time is 7:07 p.m. Remington Park will take Sunday off and come back with Monday and Tuesday afternoon racing at 2:30 p.m.
