Vian Wolverines begin Class 2A playoffs tonight with rematch against Eufaula

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Vian Wolverines will begin the Class 2A playoffs tonight against one of their opponents from earlier this season.

The Vian Wolverines will begin the Class 2A playoffs tonight against one of their opponents from earlier this season.

The Wolverines (6-4) will hit the road for their Class 2A opening-round playoff game at 7 tonight at Eufaula’s Paul Bell Stadium to meet the same opponent they opened their home season with on Sept. 1 — the Eufaula Ironheads (7-3), who Vian defeated 35-27 for its first win of 2023.

Unfortunately, the Wolverines are entering the Class 2A playoffs on a downer as they have lost their final two games of the season — losing 29-23 to Prague on Oct. 27 and falling 38-35 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah last Friday night in the home finale as the Indians spoiled Senior Night for Vian.

The back-to-back losses to end the regular season and District 2A-5 play not only cost the Wolverines the district title but a home playoff game as they ended up finishing third, making them visit the District 2A-6 runnerup Ironheads, who lost 4913 in their district-title clash with the Idabel Warriors.

The Vian-Eufaula winner will visit the winner of tonight’s Sperry-Adair winner at 7 p.m. next Friday.

However, should the Wolverines win their first two postseason games, they will be the host team for the Class 2A state quarterfinals against the team that survives the other side of the bracket — which features Washington, Lexington, Oklahoma Christian School and Meeker. If Washington makes the state quarterfinals, that, too, would be a rematch for the Wolverines, who lost 55-13 to the Warriors. The good thing is the rematch would take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 at St. John Stadium.
