TULSA — The Tulsa men’s soccer team’s season came to a close last Wednesday as the Golden Hurricane and the Florida International University Panthers battled to a 2-2 draw at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium. Tulsa ends the season at 4-8-3 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play.

Tulsa needed a win over the Panthers and a loss by Temple to No. 10 Southern Methodist University to qualify for the American Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament. Last Wednesday’s draw gives the Owls the tiebreaker for the sixth and final spot for the tournament. The Hurricane had made conference postseason in the last three seasons.

Tulsa struck first in the 38th minute with a right-footed goal by Mike Eijgendaal. Setting him up was Takayoshi Wyatt, who had two shots on goal before the score, the second of which ricocheted off the right cross bar straight into Eijgendaal’s lap for a 1-0 lead.

Down 2-1, Tulsa caught a break in the 77th minute when FIU committed a handball in the Panther penalty box. The sure-footed Sergio Baena stepped up and converted the penalty kick to knot up the score at two goals apiec Tulsa honored seniors Baena, Eshwar Challa, Eijgendaal, Malik Henry-Scott, Luke Jeffus, Paul Richnow, Cedrik Stern and Wyatt before the start of the match.
