The Sequoyah County Historical Society will meet on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. at their museum, located at 200 E. Creek in Sallisaw.
Guest speaker will be Waaneaa Parker, the granddaughter of the last Chief of the Comanches, Quanah Parker.
Waaneaa was born on the Comanche Reservation in Southwest Oklahoma, the daughter of Topesuyup Parker and her husband, Ohnas Kobe. She learned to speak English at an early age and is now fluent in Spanish and several other languages. She would also like to learn Cherokee.
A very talented lady, Waaneaa now lives in Sallisaw. In her studio, she is busy making arrows, bows, needlework, beadwork, and she also paints.
Although her grandfather was a famous person, she does not seek notoriety. She did not meet her grandfather because she was born after his death. Her grandfather’s home is still standing near Cache, Okla., but she said it is now in bad condition.
Waaneaa said she is not a public speaker, so her friend, Dr. J. Craig of Bristow, will speak on her behalf. Dr. Craig is an expert in Comanche history and he will speak about the Comanche and their people.
The public is invited to attend the meeting. A reception will follow the meeting hosted by Mildred Taylor.
