Sooners lose to Tennessee, Princeton in Fort Myers Tip-Off

The Sooners lost their opener in the two-day event as they fell 77-63 to Princeton.
In the loss to Tennessee, Powell’s three-point play with 6:08 to play put the Lady Vols on top 61-59, their first lead since late in the first quarter. Destiny Wells scored the next five points for Tennessee and then Powell scored the last 10 points, including a pair of clutch 3s.
Powell’s 3 at the shot-clock buzzer made it 71-64 with 2:05 to play. The Sooners clawed back within two before she drilled another with 21 seconds remaining.
Powell was 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line in the last 10 minutes.
-Jewel Spear scored 16 points for Tennessee (4-2) and Sara Puckett had 13 with eight rebounds.
Sahara Williams scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Sooners (5-2). Lexy Keys and Aubrey Joens added 12 apiece. Williams was named to the Fort Myers Women’s Tip-Off All-Tournament Team following the game.
In the loss to Princeton, OU nearly erased the deficit once but couldn’t in the second half as Princeton knocked off the No. 22 Sooners.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for OU as the Tigers upended the Sooners’ perfect start. Joens finished with a team-high 13 points, but OU shot just 34.8 percent on the day.
Joens’ 13 was the highlight for OU, but Nevaeh Tot scored a season-high 11 points. Tot’s trio of 3-point baskets in the first half sparked a 14-2 run that got the Sooners back in the game after Princeton opened up a 23-7 lead after the first quarter.
OU got within five points, but the Tigers were stronger down the stretch, holding the OU attack off to secure the 14-point victory.
Skylar Vann finished with eight points and six boards and freshman Williams also tallied eight. Beatrice Culliton corralled a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. The Sooners tallied 13 assists and were outrebounded for the first time this season as Princeton won that battle 50-37.
The Sooners will be home tonight for a 6 p.m. contest against Grambling at Lloyd Noble Center.
