Spiro’s Lindsey Wortham signed to run cross country with Carl Albert State College in a signing ceremony Tuesday afternoon at Spiro High School, becoming Spiro’s first athlete to sign for college cross country.
“I always thought I was going to do softball (in college),” said Wortham, who also plays softball and basketball. “I tried out cross- ountry, and I loved it. I loved the feeling afterwards, and I think I’m pretty naturally talented at it.”
Wortham placed fourth in the Class 3A regional meet and 25th in the state meet in October. This was her second appearance at state in a sport after competing in the Class 3A state track meet as a freshman.
“I’ve discovered that your mind will stop before your body, so you’ve got to have the right mindset about it,” she said. “I’ve learned what I’m capable of.”
Wortham said she looks forward to running in new places and making new friends as part of the CASC team.
CASC currently has eight female runners projected for next year, including five newcomers. On the men’s side, the Vikings have two runners currently for 2024, including one newcomer.
This is Spiro’s first year of high school cross country.
“She just came right in and worked her tail off,” Spiro cross country coach Brayden Cox said. “No matter if it’s the first year or the 20th year, I think a student like that and an athlete like that would get to sign is great.”
