Sallisaw wrestling duo competes for CASC at Doane Conner/Oppenheim Open

At 184 pounds, former Sallisaw wrestler Trey Hudgens, who got a first-round bye, went 4-2 during the two-day event. After being pinned by Ottawa University’s Rocco D’Ascoli in 3:22, Hudgens defeated Doane’s Zaire Ridley 14-11, got two straight pinfall wins over Southeast Community College’s Jurgen Baker (1:16) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Sherman Sheldon and then lost in the consolation quarterfinals by pinfall to Grand View University’s Lucas Hagerman (2:51) to finish tied for ninth.
The other former Sallisaw matman in the tournament was heavyweight Ryan Bashant-Honeycutt, who lost his first match 5-4 to Matheson Rodriguez of Hastings, Neb. Then, the former Black Diamond got a second-round consolation bye before beating Missouri Baptist’s Jacob Bader 6-3. He then got pinned by Missouri’s Amad Soufi in 3:47.
The highest Viking to place was Matthan Mason at 174 pounds, who finished sixth. He opened with a pinfall victory in 2:58 over Nebraska Wesleyan’s Diontrell Evans in 2:58, then got a major decision over Shawn Pierre of York, Neb., before losing 6-1 to Grand View’s Dillon Fitzpatrick. In the consolation action, Mason got a 11-2 major decision over Graceland University’s Aiden Sanchez and a 14-10 decision over Graceland’s Jeremiah Nyberg in the consolation semifinals before falling by an 11-3 major decision to Naim Abualjubain of Hastings in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Mason lost his second match of the two-day event to Fitzpatrick. At 165 pounds, Noah Smith, who got a first-round bye, lost by a 17-0 technical fall to Grand View University’s Justin McCunn. After getting a consolation second-round bye, Smith got an 11-3 major decision over Graceland’s Jett Nelson, a 9-3 win over Grand View’s Cody Anderson and a 16-1 technical fall over Ottawa’s Bridger Bennion before losing by injury default to Baker University’s Joey Hancock in the consolation quarterfinals to finish tied for seventh place. Cale Glover, wrestling at 157 pounds, got a first-round bye before losing a 12-2 major decision to Missouri Baptist’s Hunter Song. After getting a second-round bye in the consolation portion of the tournament, Glover pinned both Nebraska Wesleyan’s Brett Wilke (1:01) and Alex Alcala of Hastings (1:56) before losing 13-10 to Missouri Baptist’s Joel Campbell.
At 165 pounds, Cody Riddell lost 1310 to William Penn’s Tavian Thomas, then beat Barret Brandt of Concordia, Neb., by pinfall (1:52) before losing a 21-5 technical fall match to Southeast Community College’s Diego Maganda.
Kason Mitchell, grappling at 141 pounds, got a first-round bye, then lost by pinfall to Doane’s Quentin Frank (4:13). After a consolation second-round bye, Mitchell lost 9-6 to Dakota University Tyson Durham.
The Vikings will return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday for a road dual against Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan., before both the Vikings and Lady Vikings wrestle in a women’s/men’s dual beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday against Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.
