The city of Sallisaw and Sallisaw Public Schools have agreed to share concession and restroom facilities for patrons of the new Stanley H. Collins Aquatic Center and neighboring Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.
Additional engineering costs of $90,000 related to design changes so that the pool can accommodate football fans will be paid by the school district as a reimbursement.
At a special meeting last week, the Sallisaw Municipal Authority board of trustees approved an amendment to its contract with PDG LLC, dba Planning Design Group, for design consultant services in the amount of $90,000 for the municipal aquatics center and skate park.
The original contract was approved on April 11, 2022.
“We’ve come to an agreement on what we can do and proceed with the co-use of the facilities,” Sallisaw City Manager Keith Skelton said of conversations with the school district.
“The school system will reimburse us for the $90,000” needed for the additional design, survey and engineering work required.
In addition to covering costs for the design changes and engineering work, Skelton said the city and school district have “agreed on how much the school can contribute to the project as well for the construction phase.” While Skelton wouldn’t reveal the dollar amount the school district will provide, he said “it is a number that will help us meet our budget demands of the project with some of the changes that we’re doing.”
“I feel like this is a win-win situation for both the city and the school system to where we can have co-use of these facilities. We’re still gonna have a very nice facility,” Skelton said.
The original contract was for $458,750. With the $90,000 amendment, the new contract amount is $548,750.
“City staff has been working hard behind the scenes to try to get our project off the ground given the bid results that we had a couple of months ago,” Skelton told the trustees. “We’re still on track to try to bid this as quick as we can after January 1. We want to try to get the bids out there to give the contractor a full 12 months, and our goal is to have this constructed by summer of 2025.”
