In a regular board meeting held on Dec. 11, the Roland Board of Education addressed various issues, including contract renewals, surplus items and financial matters.

President Kevin Flurry called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. with Vice President Jerry Brooks, Clerk Charles Howard, Deputy Clerk Ronnie Hemphill, and Member Utah Everett in attendance.

The minutes of the previous meeting held on Nov. 13 were read by Superintendent Lori Wiggins and approved unanimously, along with the Indian Policies and Procedures for the 202324 school year.

Everett motioned to approve surplus items for auction, with Howard seconding the motion, receiving unanimous approval. The items will be auctioned off by Border Town Auction.

In a move to update approved signatures, Josh Gilstrap was removed and Myron Lockwood was added to specific accounts related to horticulture, metal and sausage (FFA), with the changes taking effect on Jan. 3, 2024.

Superintendent Wiggins recommended moving into executive session at 6:10 p.m. to discuss employment opportunities, specifically the contract renewals of the superintendent and assistant superintendent. The executive session was attended by board members, Wiggins and Assistant Superintendent Angie Goode.

After returning to open session at 7:08 p.m., the board members unanimously voted to renew both Wiggins and Goode’s contracts.

The board also unanimously approved various encumbrances and reports, including the General Fund, Building Fund, Co-Op Fund, and others. Detailed financial reports were presented, including General Fund Encumbrances totaling $293,754.95, Building Fund Encumbrances amounting to $42,339.40, and Co-Op Fund Encumbrances at $5,332.86.

In new business, all board members voted in favor to approve appropriations of $14,260 to the county clerk of Sequoyah County for the 2024 Co-Op Fund.

During the Administrator’s Report, Wiggins gave a rundown of all events for the remainder of the semester and the beginning of January, and praised the progress of the energy audit, stating Mr. Harvey was doing a great job with that program. She also provided a list of facility and grounds improvements with updated completion dates.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
