Hamilton seeking city council seat ‘to make impact’

Brad Hamilton wants to have a positive impact on the place he calls home, so he’s running for a seat on the Sallisaw Board of City Commissioners to represent Ward 4.

Brad Hamilton wants to have a positive impact on the place he calls home, so he’s running for a seat on the Sallisaw Board of City Commissioners to represent Ward 4.

“My neighbors aren’t just people next door, they are my friends,” Hamilton says. “I have enjoyed building lasting relationships with people in this community through good works and company. I believe one of the greatest purposes in life is to serve, not just friends and family, but to anyone in need. Service gives you an opportunity to turn strangers into friends and make a positive difference in the place you call home.”

A resident of Ward 4 since 2007, Hamilton believes his best opportunity to make a difference is as a city commissioner.

“What made me want to run was a desire to have a positive impact on the place I call home in whatever way was possible. The council position, I believe, offers a real opportunity to do just that.”

Hamilton acknowledges that there is no single issue he wants to address as a city commissioner.

“Really, it’s more that I want to be part of helping to make several improvements, whether that be quality of life, i.e., parks, community spaces, etc.; economic improvements to attract more businesses; or even budget/equipment issues so the city can better serve its citizens,” he says.

“Another factor was I wanted to be an example for my son on how important it is to be a man of action and be proactive in creating change in your community.”

Hamilton is a Sallisaw graduate, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in information technology from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. He worked in IT for several years, including a few for the City of Sallisaw and the hospital when it was Sequoyah Memorial Hospital.

He is married and has a 12-year-old son.

Hamilton, 38, is being challenged by Jeannie Lynn Richardson for the three-year seat currently held by Kristin Peerson. The Ward 2 seat is also on the ballot, with Steven Hatcher challenging incumbent Josh Bailey. The election is set for Feb. 13.
