Sequoyah County Tournament begins Tuesday at Sallisaw, Gans venues

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

I know it seems like the first week of January 2024 was not going to ever arrive, but it’s here next week.

I know it seems like the first week of January 2024 was not going to ever arrive, but it’s here next week.

You Sequoyah County fans have been waiting ever since Jan. 7 — the night of the 2023 Sequoyah County Tournament finals, which were won by the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs on the girls’ side for the second straight year and the Roland Running Rangers after losing to rival Muldrow in the 2022 SCT title game.

The 2024 Sequoyah County Tournament will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at both Sallisaw High School’s Paul Post Field House and Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse at Gans High School. The finals are slated for 6 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6 at Paul Post Field House as Sallisaw is the host school for this season’s SCT. The brackets are accompanying this week’s column This will be my first-ever Sequoyah County Tournament, since beginning in 2011 I was dealing with the LeFlore County Tournament.

I know my fellow sports writer Buck Ringgold spoke highly of the event, as well as enjoyed covering it for his former newspaper just across the border.

The Roland boys and Muldrow girls were awarded the top seeds at the SCT seeding meeting, which took place last month at Paul Post Field House.

Just to remind you of the remaining seeds, on the boys’ side, Muldrow was seeded second, followed by Vian in third, Sallisaw fourth, Stigler fifth, Central sixth, Gore seventh and Gans eighth.

On the girls’ side, Roland was voted by the coaches as the No. 2 seed, with Stigler third, Central fourth, Sallisaw fifth, Vian sixth, Gans seventh and Gore eighth.

Just because the two-time defending champion Lady Bulldogs and last year’s champion Running Rangers got the top seeds, that doesn’t guarantee repeat champions — or a three-peat in the case of the Lady Bulldogs.

On the boys’ side, Roland is 8-1, followed by Stigler (5-2), Vian (3-2), Sallisaw (4-4), Gore (4-4), Central (3-4), Gans (3-4) and Muldrow (3-5) in order of plus-.500 teams to those below .500. Vian and Stigler could provide Roland issues in the tournament, but the Running Rangers will have to knock off the Grizzlies — whose big man Josh Brunk had a 46-point outing against Oaks on Dec. 4 at home — on their home court on Tuesday. Of course, if they put it all together, SCT host Sallisaw, Muldrow, Central and Gore could make some noise next week.

On the girls’ side, Muldrow is 6-2, followed by Roland (7-2), Stigler (6-1), Central (5-2), Gans (3-4), Sallisaw (35), Vian (1-4) and Gore (1-6). The Lady Bulldogs are learning, at least at the present time, how to cope without senior Kennedi “Kiki” Wight, who is currently out with a knee injury. The Lady Bulldogs almost lost to Sallisaw on Dec. 15 at home if not for a buzzerbeater by Claire Tabor to survive 32-31, then had to rally on Dec. 19 at Roland to knock off the Lady Rangers 44-38 — but their luck ran out on Dec. 21 when they were stunned at home by Poteau 50-48.

That could mean the girls’ crown is up for grabs. Roland certainly believes it could beat Muldrow should the two teams meet in the Jan. 6 finals.

Speaking of the Lady Diamonds, new coach Eric Carr believes at any time, his new teams’ shooting and confidence could spring up at any time, making them a dangerous team.

The Lady Tigers only have been beaten by two of the state’s best teams — 5126 by Class 2A’s Warner Lady Eagles on Dec. 11 at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center and 56-37 to Class 2A’s secondranked team in the state, the Howe Lady Lions, in the home opener Dec. 19.

The Lady Panthers will be a formidable team on the girls’ side, and, since they are the sub-host team, the Lady Grizzlies will have an edge — at least to begin — when they get to play on their home court.

I’m excited for next week, and I hope you all are as well.

This column will return to its usual spot on Wednesday editions beginning next week. Next week’s key topic will be a sneak peek at the 2024 Arkansas River Shootout, which begins Thursday and ends the following Saturday at Webbers Falls.

Last week saw only one 20-point-plus scorer, and that honor went to Gore’s Cain Cooper, who scored 22 points in the Pirates’ Riverside Conference road win over Arkoma on Dec. 19. Of course, there has been no action on the hardwood, other than practices, this week. That will all change beginning Tuesday.

We had no double-doubles or tripledoubles reported during last week’s games.

If you coaches will make me aware of any such performances by your players, I’ll give them special recognition as well as the 20-plus individual scorers each week.

We had a historic night on Tuesday in the National Basketball Association, and it wasn’t in a good way.

The Detroit Pistons are now the sole record holders of the longest losing streak in NBA history at 27 after they lost 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Nets handed the Pistons their 26th straight loss on Saturday night at Barclays Center in New York City.

Prior to Tuesday night’s new record for futility by the Pistons, the last time such a streak was 26, set by both the 201314 Philadelphia 76ers and the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers. The 76ers did lose 28 straight games, but it overlapped seasons — starting at the tail end of the 2014-15 season and ended in the early stages of the 2015-16 season.

The Pistons, whose last victory came in their home opener Oct. 28 against Chicago, tried to avoid that dubious mark of 28 losses Thursday night with their road contest at Boston.

CORRECTION

Although this does not apply to a local athlete, I did error in my Muldrow basketball story as to who led the Poteau Lady Pirates in scoring. Parker Patterson led the way in Poteau’s 50-48 win with 23 points, while Emma Hackler added 12 points as the Lady Pirates got their first win over the Lady Bulldogs since Feb 14, 2014.

Your TIMES regrets the error.
