Webbers Falls girls win 3rd-place game in Arkansas River Shootout

The Webbers Falls Lady Warriors won the third-place game of their own tournament, the 2024 Arkansas River Shootout, with a 44-26 win over the Cave Springs Lady Hornets on Saturday afternoon.

After routing Oaks 5522 on Thursday night, the Lady Warriors lost in the championship semifinals 4836 to Battiest on Friday night.

The Warriors ended up sixth after losing Saturday afternoon’s consolation finals 52-48 in double overtime to Cave Springs. After dropping a 65-49 decision to Oaks in Thursday night’s openinground game, the Warriors bounced back to handle Watts 59-47 in Friday night’s consolation semifinals.

In the girls’ third-place game, the Lady Warriors (5-4) led from start to finish, leading 8-5 after a quarter, 21-9 at halftime and 37-14 after three periods.

For the game, Abby Pense scored a game-high 13 points and Bridgette Baer added 11 points to lead Webbers Falls. Teralynn Colston had nine points, followed by Lextyn Chappell with seven points and Cheyenne Herrier and Bailey Ward with two points apiece.

In the girls’ opening-round victory, the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 17-2 lead after a period and were never headed.

For the game, Teralynn Colston scored a game-high 13 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Herrier with nine points, Pense with eight points, Laina Colston and Bailey Ward with six points each, Audri Spears with four points, Abbie Patterson with three points and Baer, Chappell and Bentley Ward with two points apiece.

In the girls’ championship semifinal loss, Teralynn Colston scored 15 of her 17 points in the first half, but Battiest had a 28-24 lead at halftime.

Webbers Falls kept the game within striking distance for three-plus quarters. Multiple times early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Warriors were within three points, but could not get the lead.

In defeat, Teralynn Colston led Webbers Falls with 17 points, followed by Baer with eight points, Herrier with four points, Chappell with three points and Pense and Spears with two points apiece.

In the boys’ consolation finals against Cave Springs, the Hornets used a fourth-quarter rally to get the game tied at 44-all to force overtime. After neither team scored in the first OT, the Hornets doubled up the Warriors 8-4 in the second extra session to complete the come-from-behind victory.

In defeat, Stryker Chappell shared gamehigh honors with Cave Springs player Talan Holmes with 20 points to lead the Warriors (4-5), followed by Maddux Shelby with 10 points, Denver Morgan and Braydan Robinson with five points each, Luke Pierce with four points and Elliott Kunkel and Caleb Dishman with two points apiece.

In the boys’ consolation semifinals, a slow first quarter by the Warriors put Watts ahead 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Webbers Falls was able slow the Watts offense down a little and kept the Watts lead at eight points at 29-21 at halftime.

With 4:36 to go in the third quarter Watts star player Skylar Payne fouled out with 12 points with the Engineers leading 34-29 lead.

Payne’s exit sparked Webbers Falls, which then went on a 8-0 run and Maddux Shelby hit a buzzer-beater to give Webbers Falls a 42-41 advantage to start the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Watts picked up two technical fouls and an intentional foul which helped Webbers Falls close the game at the free-throw line.

For the game, Maddux Shelby led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, followed by Chappell with 17 points, Gunner Shelby with five points, Kunkel and Robinson with four points each, Pierce with three points and Morgan with a free throw.

In the boys’ opening-round loss in a battle off Warriors, Webbers Falls led 13-11 after a quarter, but Oaks used a 24-7 second period to take a 35-22 halftime lead en route to a 53-36 third-quarter lead heading into the final period.

In defeat, Stryker scored a game-high 22 points to lead Webbers Falls, followed by Dishman with nine points, Robinson with seven points, Gunner Shelby with four points, Blake Rowe with three points, Maddux Shelby with two points and Kunkel with a free throw.
