Sooners drop back-to-back duals to Iowa State, Northern Iowa

NORMAN — The No. 18 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 4 Iowa State 37-4 inside McCasland Field House on Friday night.

NORMAN — The No. 18 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 4 Iowa State 37-4 inside McCasland Field House on Friday night.

One Sooner picked up a win in the contest. At 197 pounds, senior Stephen Buchanan remained undefeated on the season after cruising to a 19-5 major decision over ISU’s Caleb Helgeson. In the first period, Buchanan scored a takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the second. The Loyal, Wisc., native added another takedown in the middle period, but Helgeson earned two escapes to stay within striking distance at 6-2. Buchanan responded by dominating the final period, adding three more takedowns, a reversal and riding time to close out the bout.

With the victory, Buchanan moved to a perfect 17-0 on the season.

On Saturday, OU fell to No. 22 Northern Iowa, 30-12 inside McCasland Field House on Saturday night.

Six Panthers secured bonus-point victories, helping Northern Iowa improve their record to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 action while OU fell to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in league duals.

In the 125-pound bout, Conrad Hendriksen got the Sooners on the board first, defeating UNI’s No. 30 Trever Anderson behind a pair of takedowns and an escape, 7-6.

OU got wins from No. 32 Willie McDougald with a 3-2 win over Cael Rahnavardi, No. 28 Cael Carlson in a 7-6 win over R.J. Weston and heavyweight No. 11 Josh Heindselman scored a key takedown in suddenvictory defeat No. 16 Tyrell Gordon 4-1.

OU has a week off before returning to McCasland Field House for the team’s final home dual Feb. 9 against No. 10 South Dakota State.
