Gans sweeps homecoming games from Cave Springs, splits Senior Night games with Midway

It was a happy homecoming for the Gans High School basketball teams Friday night at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse as they swept a pair of games from the visiting Cave Springs teams.

The Grizzlies started things off on the night with a 61-35 win over the Hornets, then the Lady Grizzlies stung the Lady Hornets 34-18.

On Senior Night on Monday at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse, the Gans squads split their regular-season finales with Midway as the Grizzlies won 4533, but the Lady Grizzlies lost 4337.

In the girls’ homecoming victory, the Lady Grizzlies (7-15) jumped out to a 17-5 lead after a period and never looked back.

For the game, homecoming queen Melania Paniagua scored a game-high 13 points to lead Gans, followed by Brianna Burris with eight points, K’Cee Osburn with six points, Aaliyah Taylor with five points and Reina Gaona with two points.

In the boys’ homecoming win over Cave Springs, the Grizzlies (10-11) jumped out to a 16-6 lead after a quarter en route to a 33-15 halftime advantage and a 47-26 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Josh Brunk scored a game-high 22 points and Mayson Clifton added 21 points to lead Gans, followed by Ashton Langston with seven points, Gunner Vanscoy with five points and Bryce Stevens and Riley Pullin with two points apiece.

In the boys’ Senior Night win over Midway, the Grizzlies, who led 12-6 after a quarter and 2211 at halftime, built as much as a 14-point lead on more than one occasion in the second half, but they still had to fight off a fourthquarter rally by the Chargers.

For the game, Clifton and Pullin each scored 11 points to lead Gans, followed by Vanscoy with nine points, Brunk with six points, Stevens with three points, Langston and Garrett Overby with two points each and Nakota White with a free throw.

In the girls’ Senior Night loss to Midway, a basket by Burris tied the game at 6-all with 1:21 left in the first period. It would be the last tie of the game as the Lady Grizzlies never led.

The Lady Chargers, who led 8-7 after a quarter and a 20-11 halftime advantage, built as much as an 11-point lead at 22-11 with 7:48 left in the third quarter, but the Lady Grizzlies cut the deficit to five points at 24-19 on another Burris basket with 4:10 left in the period. That would be as close as Gans got, other than cutting its deficit to six points at 41-35 with 1:50 remaining to play in the game on a basket by Burris.

In defeat, Burris shared gamehigh honors with 15 points and Paniagua added 11 points to lead Gans, followed by Osburn with five points, Gaona with four points and Stevie Pratt with two points.
