SAN MARCOS, Texas — The University of Tulsa softball team closed out last weekend with a 5-1 loss to Sam Houston State on Sunday in the Texas State Tournament.

The Hurricane (5-4) finished the weekend 3-2 with two wins over Texas State and a win against Northern Colorado. On Friday, the Golden Hurricane beat Northern Colorado 11-5 and the host Bobcats 5-2 before splitting with Texas State on Saturday — winning the nightcap 3-1 after losing the opener 3-2.

Alexa Hopkins (0-1) was in the circle for the Golden Hurricane against Sam Houston State and pitched a good game, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs, none earned, on three hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Maura Moore threw an inning of relief and was responsible for three runs on a long ball in the sixth. Kylee Nash tossed the final inning and a third, striking out one, walking one and giving up a single hit. At the plate, Celeste Wood had Tulsa’s lone RBI, driving in Abby Jones with a double in the second. No Tulsa players had multiple hits in the game.

In the win over Northern Colorado, MacKenzie Denson went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Jones went 2-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored, Maci Cole went 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs, Wood doubled with two RBIs and Kennedy Cramer tripled with an RBI and a run scored.

Anneca Anderson got the win in relief, going the final four innings with five strikeouts. Nash started and went the first four innings wi9th two Ks.

In Friday’s win over Texas State, Denson went 2-for-3, Cramer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Claira Skaggs doubled with an RBI and Haley Morgan tripled with two RBIs.

Moore (2-1) got the win, fanning eight batters in 6.1 innings. Hopkins got the final two outs of the game.

In Saturday’s games with Texas State, both of Tulsa’s games on Saturday featured good defense and pitching, with no runs until the sixth inning of game one, and the fourth of the second game. Anderson (2-0) performed well in her second week of collegiate action, going the distance in the win over Texas State. She struck out eight and allowed just one run on four hits.

Moore (2-2) also put in a strong shift with a difficult sixth inning blemishing an otherwise stellar outing. Three of the five hits she allowed, and all three runs, occurred in the sixth. Nash came in to pitch the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out a pair.

Morgan, Denson, Cole and Imani Edwards all had multiple hits on the day. Edwards, Wood, Skaggs, Jones and Kailyn Bearpaw each recorded an RBI during the day.

The Golden Hurricane will be in this weekend’s Nevada-Las Vegas Rebel Classic, where they will meet Southern Utah at 2:30 p.m. and host UNLV at 8 p.m. tonight, Southern Utah at noon and Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and UNLV once more at 3 p.m. Sunday.
