Sooner triple jumper wins Big 12 title

LUBBOCK, Texas — The University of Oklahoma track and field team wrapped up Day 2 of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday night.

LUBBOCK, Texas — The University of Oklahoma track and field team wrapped up Day 2 of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday night.

B.J. Green earned his first Big 12 title, five Sooners scored top-eight finishes and three grabbed new personal records.

The women’s team placed ninth with 35 points and the men’s squad placed eighth with 41.5 points.

The women’s shot put opened the day for the Sooners. Senior Paige Low earned fourth place and scored for OU with a 551.5 toss. Freshman Tuane Silver threw a career-high 48-4.5 and Kennedy Clarke registered a PR 46-9.5.

Three Sooners competed in the women’s triple jump where Victory George and Jasmine Akins jumped to season bests. Akins registered 40-9 and George recorded 40-1.25. Agur Dwol grabbed a 39-7.75 mark. T h e Sooners swept the men’s triple jump. Green took first place with a 54-0 jump, holding steady at the first place the entirety of the event. Floyd Whitaker earned third with a personal-record 52-3.25 jump, the No. 8 mark in OU indoor history. Green and Whitaker accounted for a combined 16 points toward the men’s team score.

Nicholas Young scored with a sixth place finish in the men’s mile, clocking in at 4:06.16.

In distance, junior Gabi Barrera ran for 9:53.28 in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Erin O’Brien grabbed a 10:17.45 time.

Freshman Kyren Washington and Tyson Ritz competed in the men’s high jump. Ritz recorded 6-10.75 for ninth and Washington registered a 6-7.

To conclude field events, graduate Diego Trevino grabbed second place in the men’s shot put, posting a season-best 63-2.25 throw. Bryant Parlin recorded 56-8.5.

Freshman Dominic Kipnyango Serem raced to fourth place, scoring for the Sooners with an 8:01.33 time. Thobias Cheruiyot earned an 8:10.58 finish.

The women’s 1,600 relay of Jada Atkinson, Jayda Gibson, Alyia Green and Jenna James posted a 3:41.93 time for 10th place.

The Sooners with qualifying marks will travel to the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 8-9 in Boston. The rest of the squad will prepare for their first outdoor meet at the Texas Christian University Alumni Classic on March 15-16 in Fort Worth, Texas.
