Keep a food diary

By Billie Anthony

Today we had a wonderful group of 13 ladies weigh in. Annette had our best weight loss of 1.6 pounds. Weigh to go Annette! We drew from the Two Bit Bowl and Jerry was the lucky lady to win the quarters for losing weight this past week. Four of our ladies got to sign the Loser’s Lotto contest. We had a new Surprise box today. The surprise box always gets the ladies curious as to what is in it. I gave out the award certificates that we received at the SAG (Southeast Awards Gathering). I was really proud of our members. TOPS 0737 had the greatest weight loss of 106.6 pounds last quarter. The theme was Sweating with the Oldies, so we dressed up for the costume contest. Our Lynda won first place and I won third place. The baskets that each chapter brought, our chapter won three of the baskets. We had certificates for best weight loss, most exercise, most food diaries kept and most miles walked. We had a lot of fun. The next SAG day will be hosted by Sallisaw TOPS 0737 on June 15. Our theme will be Space: The Last Frontier. We have several Trekkies in our chapter, including me.

Our chapter challenge for this week is to try out a new Lo-Cal recipe and share the recipe with the group. Next week for the fun of it, the Leaders Challenge is to determine what is ‘golden about your golden years’. We should have some good discussion and lots of laughter.

Our program was “The Importance of Keeping a Food Diary.” Let’s address the importance of keeping a food diary as a tool to build self-awareness and control weight. If you bite it, write it! Keeping a food diary is one of the most powerful tools for weight reduction and weight management. Need convincing? Consider this: research published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine indicates that those people who write down everything they eat each day lose twice as much weight as those who don’t. Keeping a food diary allows us to hold ourselves accountable for every bite we take or sip we swallow. It can be very easy to forget about the handful of chips we grabbed before dinner or that sliver of birthday cake we munched on before wrapping up the rest. These little handfuls and bites add up, however, and overlooking them is a big mistake. In fact, it’s estimated that each mouthful is about 25 calories. That’s 100 calories in four mouthfuls, which can add up to an extra ten pounds in one year! Be honest, if you ‘cheat’ on your food diary you are only cheating your own weight-loss efforts.

We closed our meeting with the TOPS Pledge. EVERYONE is invited to visit. The FIRST VISIT is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10:30am-12pm. We begin weighing at 10:30am and the meeting starts at 11am and ends at 12. For more info, please call Billie at 918/413-1383. We look forward to meeting you.
