Lady Diamonds suffer season-opening losses to Checotah, Okmulgee

CHECOTAH — After Monday’s season opener at Eufaula was rained out Monday, the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds finally got to begin their 2024 slowpitch softball season, but unfortunately they opened with a pair of losses — 11-3 to host Checotah and 8-6 to Okmulgee.

In the loss to Checotah, the Lady Wildcats broke a 1-all tie with a two-run second inning, a six-run third inning and a single run in the fourth inning for a 10-1 lead after four innings.

In defeat, Sydney Weedon was 3-for-3 with as a double, a triple and two runs scored, Madison Green was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Channing Wilson was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in and KeLee Curson was 2-for-3 for the Lady Diamonds (0-2). Emma Lessley took the loss.

In the loss to Okmulgee, one of the highlights of the game was Emma Martin’s two-run single.

Webbers Falls 17, Central 12 Oktaha JV 13, Webbers Falls 3 Porum13, Webbers Falls 1 Tuesday at Porum’s Diamond Club Festival, the Lady Warriors (1-8) picked up their first win of the season with a come-from-behind win over the Lady Tigers.

Trailing 10-8 after five innings, the Lady Warriors erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to take a 17-10 lead. Maddy Raskey led off the rally with a home run into the parking lot, then Lextyn Chappell, Bentley Ward, Gracie Sturgell and Bailey Ward also had RBI hits to fuel the rally.

There was no Central individual information reported to Your TIMES by press time.

In the loss to the Oktaha junior varsity, the Warriors took a 3-2 lead after an inning, but the Lady Tigers scored eight runs in the third inning and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Raskey was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored for Webbers Falls. Laina Colston took the loss.

In the loss to Porum, the host Lady Panthers scored twice in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead.

In defeat, Bridgette Baer was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Webbers Falls. Colston took the loss.

Oktaha 20, Central 5 Oktaha JV 25, Central 12 Stigler 12, Central 2 Hulbert 12, Central 0 Porum 17, Central 1

Tuesday and Wednesday at Porum’s Diamond Club Festival, the Lady Tigers (0-6) fell short in all games played in the two-day event to begin the 2024 season.

In Tuesday’s loss to Oktaha, after the Lady Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, the Lady Tigers responded with a 10-run first inning and a fourrun second inning for a 14-3 lead after two innings. A six-run third inning put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Ayrland Jiles was 2-for-2 with two home runs and five runs batted in, while Riley Rowland was 2-for-2 for Central. Alyssa Harris took the loss.

In Tuesday’s loss to the Oktaha junior varsity, the Lady Tigers broke a 2-all tie with a five-run second inning and a three-run third inning to take a 10-2 lead. A two-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning cut Central’s deficit to 10-8 after four innings but got no closer.

In defeat, Jiles was 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, four RBIs and a run scored, Brianna Taylor was 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored, Cheyenne Busch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Cambree Bair was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Rowland homered with three runs scored and two RBIs for Central. Harris took the loss.

In Wednesday’s loss to Stigler, the Lady Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, which became an 8-1 advantage by the third inning.

In Wednesday’s loss to Hulbert, the Lady Riders broke a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning and a nine-run fourth inning to put the game into runrule status.

In Wednesday’s loss to Porum, the Lady Panthers put away the game with a 13-run first inning.

Central just had two hits in the game.
