Black Diamonds sweep district foe Jay
The Sallisaw Black Diamonds baseball team got a district sweep of the Jay Bulldogs, winning 6-3 at home Tuesday and getting a road 19-7 rout on Wednesday.
In Tuesday’s win, the Black Diamonds (12-5 overall, 6-0 in district play) rallied from a 3-1 third-inning deficit with a four-run third inning and a single run in the fifth inning.
For the game, Cole Mayfield doubled with two runs batted in, Creed Nelson singled with an RBI, Brock Streun singled and scored once, Cole Stephens singled and scored twice, Luke Pack and Broque Oft each scored once and Braxton Lamb had an RBI for Sallisaw.
Nelson (4-1) got the win, going the first four innings with two strikeouts. Brodie Cameron went the next two innings with two strikeouts, then Dagan Grizzle pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout. However, only three of Jay’s runs were earned on the day as Sallisaw’s four errors allowed the other three runs to score.
In Wednesday’s victory, the Black Diamonds broke a 3-all tie with a six-run second inning to take a 9-3 lead. After the Bulldogs cut their deficit to 9-6 after two innings, the Black Diamonds scored four runs in the third inning for a 13-6 advantage. After Jay trimmed the deficit to 13-7 after three innings, Sallisaw put the game into run-rule status with a tworun fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning.
For the game, Pack was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs, Nelson was 2-for-3 with a double, his first home run of the season, four RBIs and three runs scored, Mayfield doubled, Kase Adams doubled with three RBIs ands Streun tripled with two RBIs and two runs scored for Sallisaw.
Easton Wolfe (3-1) got the win in relief, going 1.1 innings with three strikeouts. Coleman Wasson started but did not record an out. Grizzle got his fifth save of the season, going the final 3.2 innings with six Ks.
The Black Diamonds will finish the weekend at the Hi l ldale/ Fort Gibson Shootout and were slated to open with the winner of Thursday’s Rattan-Wagoner game on Thursday evening. The title game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Hilldale High School in Muskogee.
