Roland beats Sallisaw, Morris for first wins of season

Lady Diamonds fall to Lady Eagles in final game of Thursday’s three-way

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Roland Lady Rangers got their first wins of the season Thursday afternoon as they defeated host Sallisaw 13-6 and Morris 6-5.

The host Lady Diamonds are still seeking their first win of the spring as they lost 18-9 in six innings to the Lady Eagles in Thursday night’s finale.

ROLAND 13, SALLISAW 6

The Lady Rangers (2-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Jaydance Bean, a bases-loaded walk to Emily Daws and a Sallisaw error.

The Lady Diamonds (0-8) got three of those runs back in their half of the inning as Delaney Compton’s two-run double and RBI single by Jaycie Cox cut Roland’s lead to 4-3 after an inning. However, that was as close as Sallisaw got.

The Lady Rangers sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring eight of them, to take a 12-3 lead. The big hits in the rally were RBI singles by Kyleigh Knapp and Bean, an RBI triple by Daws, a sacrifice fly by Lilly Cole and a two-run double by Kynlei Earnhart.

The final runs of the game for the Lady Diamonds came with one swing of the bat in the second inning as Channing Wilson connected on a threerun home run to cut the Sallisaw deficit to 12-6.

A one-out RBI single by Bean gave Roland a 13-6 lead in the third inning, which is what proved to be the final score.

For the game, Daws was 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored, Bean was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Addyson Clark was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, Chloee Strong was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Earnhart was 2-for-5 with a two-RBI double, Knapp was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Kiah Pettit doubled and scored once for Roland. Pettit got the win.

In defeat, Wilson was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and two runs scored, Madison Green was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Sydney Weedon was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Compton hit a two-RBI double and scored once for Sallisaw. Emma Lessley took the loss.

ROLAND 6, MORRIS 5

The Lady Rangers won in walk-off fashion as they scored five runs — all with two outs — in the home half of the seventh inning to get the win, with Kyleigh Knapp’s two-run triple being the game-winning hit.

For the game, Kynlei Earnhart was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Knapp hit the gamewinning, two-run triple for Roland. Earnhardt got the win.

MORRIS 18, SALLISAW 9

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but, just like against Roland, the Lady Diamonds responded with a three-run first inning as Delaney Compton’s RBI double and a Morris error produced three runs to cut the Sallisaw deficit to 4-3 after an inning. However, that was as close as the Lady Diamonds got.

Morris scored three runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning to take a 13-3 lead after three innings.

The Lady Diamonds cut their deficit to 13-6 with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by Channing Wilson hitting her second three-run home run of the day.

However, the Lady Eagles put the game into run-rule status with a five-run sixth inning for an 18-6 lead.

The Lady Diamonds tried to force a seventh inning as an RBI groundout by Abby Kate Qualls, an RBI single by Madison Green and a bases-loaded walk to Wilson produced three runs to cut the Sallisaw deficit to 18-9, but Morris pitcher Emma Duclos got Compton to ground into a game-ending fielder’s choice.

In defeat, Green was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a run batted in, Wilson was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and two runs scored and Compton was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Sallisaw. Emma Lessley took the loss.
