Sallisaw soccer teams sweep district foe Heavener

Lady Diamonds get first win of season

HEAVENER — The Sallisaw High School soccer teams picked up a pair of road district wins on the same night for the first time in the three-year history of the program as they each defeated the Heavener squads Tuesday evening at Harvey Stadium.

The Lady Diamonds got their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the Lady Wolves, then the Black Diamonds rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit for a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Wolves.

In the girls’ match, the Lady Diamonds (1-7 overall, 1-4 in district play) got the contest’s lone goal as Kyra Taylor got the ball past the Heavener goalkeeper. Sallisaw girls goalie Jocelyn Rivera made three saves on the night. In the boys’ match, the Black Diamonds (5-2, 3-1) got their first goal from Wes Rodriguez, thanks to an assist by Cesar Morales, but the Wolves found the back of the net on three occasions in the first half for a 3-1 lead.

Rodriguez scored a hat trick in the second half, with the game-winner coming on a breakaway that was set up by Brian Castor’s assist.

Sallisaw boys goalkeeper Cameron Holmes made six saves, with two of his best saves coming in the final three minutes of regulation as the Wolves were trying to find the equalizer and force overtime. The Sallisaw soccer teams will be home tonight for district matches against Poteau at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium, with the girls’ match at 5 p.m. and the boys’ contest at approximately 7 p.m. Then, the Lady Diamonds and Diamonds will travel to meet district foe Tulsa Cascia Hall on Tuesday, with the girls’ contest at 5 p.m. and the boys match at approximately 7 p.m.
