Annual Oklahoma TRASH-OFF, local cleanups scheduled

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Keep Oklahoma Beautiful in commemorating the 35th annual Oklahoma TRASH-OFF, part of the nationwide three-month Great American Cleanup. This essential event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, and the Great American Cleanup is open to participants until May 31.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Keep Oklahoma Beautiful in commemorating the 35th annual Oklahoma TRASH-OFF, part of the nationwide three-month Great American Cleanup. This essential event is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, and the Great American Cleanup is open to participants until May 31.

Individuals, groups and counties are encouraged to join the movement by registering at www.keepoklahomabeautiful. com or by calling 405-2869141. By participating, volunteers contribute to cleaner communities, safer highways and a cleaner state.

ODOT continues to devote nearly $6 million annually to combat litter along state highways, while the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority contributes about $1 million for toll road clean up. Keep Oklahoma Beautiful provides TRASHOFF supplies and promotional items, including cash grants, trash bags, gloves and water donations. Participants can pick up the necessary supplies from each of the 77 ODOT county maintenance yards.

Tenkiller Earth Day celebration

Tenkiller State Park’s Earth Day celebration will be held on Saturday, April 20, with several activities scheduled throughout the day. Refreshments will be provided.

Events are as follows: 9 A.M.-NATIVE BEE HOTEL: Come help us help our native bees that do not make honey but do make fruit, nuts, and much more through pollination.

11 A.M.-TRASH TALK HIKE: Let’s talk trash and maybe pick up a bit along the way.

1 P.M.-LITTER BUG CRAFT: Make a fun bug of your own creation. Please bring a quart sized bag of clean trash to build your bug out of. Pop bottle lids, small juice bottles, candy wrappers, or small clean milk box just to name some choices.

3 P.M.-EARTH DAY CHARADES: Can you act? Are you good at regular charades? We have Earth Day cards with things that are from a healthy earth or things that are not healthy for our planet.

Vian spring cleanup

The town of Vian will host their annual spring cleanup on April 23 and 24, which will coincide with residential customers’ regular trash pickup days.

If you can get it to the curb with your regular trash, town workers will do their best to pick it up.

Gore spring cleanup

Gore Public Works Authority (GPWA) customers will be allowed to dispose of undesirable items, with some exceptions, during the town’s spring cleanup day on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 pm.

These items will not be accepted: hazardous materials, construction debris, tires, brush/tree limbs, liquids, paint, or appliances containing Freon (such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners).

Items containing Freon may be accepted if the compressor is removed and compressors will be accepted upon removal. Batteries will also be accepted.

The location for drop off will be in large containers to be temporarily placed at the gravel parking lot west of the Steve Owens Sports Complex baseball fields. This is on Steve Owens Road which adjoins East 3rd Street and meets US-64 on the east side of Gore. You will need to present proof of service (a current GPWA water/ trash bill) to be allowed to participate. Also, a picture ID may be requested.

District 2 cleanup

District 2 County Commissioner Beau Burlison has announced a county- wide cleanup for the District 2 area on Thursday and Friday, April 18 and 19.

Burlison said unwanted items and trash can be placed in roll-off dumpsters that will be placed at the following locations:

• West of Vian (at gravel pit)

• East of Gore (Steve Owens Sports Complex)

• Blue Water Storage (Blackgum Landing Road)

• Marble City (by railroad tracks)

• West Tenkiller Fire Station (Paradise Hill)

• Pier 7 store (Wildhorse)

District 3 cleanup

Sequoyah County District 3 will have their spring cleanup for the District 3 area, May 3-6.

Unwanted items and trash can be placed in roll-off dumpsters that will be placed at the following locations:

• Central Fire Department

• Redland Fire Department

• Anglen Grocery (Nicut)

• Brent Community Center (Gans)

• Gans Public School (two dumpsters will be placed)

• Rocky Point Fire Department

• Highway 59 (across from old Sparks convenience store-two dumpsters will be placed)

• Maple Fire Department (west side of building-two dumpsters will be placed)
