Black Diamonds get $2,500 grant from NFL Players organization

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds football team received a $2,500 grant from the National Football League Players organization on Thursday night in Tulsa. Sallisaw coach Brandon Tyler personally received the check from Enid native and former University of Tulsa and NFL player Todd Franz.

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds football team received a $2,500 grant from the National Football League Players organization on Thursday night in Tulsa. Sallisaw coach Brandon Tyler personally received the check from Enid native and former University of Tulsa and NFL player Todd Franz.

Tyler said there’s a former Vian Wolverine football player who was instrumental in helping the Black Diamonds get this grant.

“Kenyatta Wright, who is the vicepresident of the NFL Players organization and is the leader of it in our area, gave me the information for it,” he said. “I filled out the paperwork, and we were awarded the grant. It will go to buying equipment and anything our kids may need.”

The money only can be used for Sallisaw football items, like equipment and clothing — especially since it’s money given to you.

“It’s good and beneficial to get free money, especially for your football program,” Tyler said. “Anything to help the kids out, buying cleats or gloves or whatever, that’s what we’ll use the money for. We got the check (Thursday) night. It just goes into our (athletic football) account. We’ll spend it when we need it.”

Tyler is just very thankful for the NFL Players organization for making the donation to help out the Sallisaw football program with its needs.

“We’re just very appreciative of the NFL Players organization for the opportunity,” he said. “We went up there (Thursday) night in Tulsa and got that check. It’s going to help our program out. It’s good for the kids.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Vian Wolverines got a similar grant.
