Roland Rascals bring state title to Sequoyah County

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Roland Rascals brought a state title to Sequoyah County on Saturday as they defeated Stigler 9-7 in the state title game of the 2024 OK Kids Age 6-and-Younger Coach-Pitch State Tournament in Weatherford. In fact, of the four teams which were in the state semifinals, two were from Sequoyah County — the Rascals and Vian.

However, the other five state OK Kids baseball teams from Sequoyah County came up short in winning a state championship last week.

In the 2024 OK Kids Age 12-and-Younger State Tournament in Weatherford, the Sallisaw Red Sox lost both of their games — 13-0 to the Woodward Sluggers, then were eliminated by the Merritt Drillers.

Of the three local teams at the OK Kids Age 10-and-Younger State Tournament at Sallisaw Sports Complex — the Vian Wolverines, the Sallisaw Red Sox and the Sallisaw Bombers — the Wolverines got the closest to a state title.

Vian opened with a 5-4 win over the Ada Warriors in the opening round on June 25, then handled the Shawnee M-Pact 12-4 to reach Thursday’s winner’s-bracket final where they lost 12-0 to the Fletcher Gold. The Wolverines were eliminated in the loser’sbracket final 6-5 by Kingfisher ’Jackets on Friday night.

The two Sallisaw teams each went 0-2 on their home fields. The Red Sox fell 9-0 to Kingfisher and 10-3 to the Washington Warriors, while the Bombers lost 19-10 to the Weatherford Eagles and 10-0 to the Poteau A’s.

In the 2024 OK Kids Age 8-and-Younger State Tournament in Clinton, the Sallisaw Cardinals went 2-2, splitting a pair of games on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, the Cardinals beat the Blanchard Lions but lost to the Purcell Dragons. On Friday, the Cardinals staved off elimination once with a win over the Fletcher Gold but were eliminated by the Poteau Crew.
