Darin Huggins initiated the motion, which reshuffled the roles within the board. Darrin Phelps assumed the presidency, while Huggins moved to vice president. Colby Wilson transitioned to clerk, and Chad Sutton reverted to a member role, alongside Dowen Green.
The board swiftly approved several items on the consent agenda, including the minutes of the previous meeting, resignations from Jacinta Yoakum and Jennifer Qualls, financial encumbrances, and payroll details for the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Leon Ashlock provided updates on the OSSBA/CCOSA Conference scheduled for August and discussed the Riley Boatwright Act, focusing on its implications for the district.
Several motions regarding operational matters were also passed. These included approving student handbook changes for the next academic year, transferring $200 in funds to the Activity Fund petty cash, and setting parameters for the 2024-25 school calendar based on hours rather than days.
A notable decision involved leasing a vocational vehicle for the upcoming year, emphasizing the district’s commitment to enhancing vocational education resources.
Following these discussions, the board entered into an executive session to deliberate on various employment matters, including the positions of a middle school teacher, Special Education director, and adjunct faculty roles. Upon returning to open session, they approved the employment of Matthew Brady as middle school teacher and several other part-time and adjunct positions. Those included Tracy Ryan as a middle school English teacher, Kathy English as Special Education director, Darryl Tyler as high school Driver Education teacher/bus driver, Phyllis Rose as middle school teacher, Janice Gibson as consultant, Jennifer Parson as adjunct middle school math teacher, and Tyler Johnson for a maintenance/ custodial position.
Other key decisions included renewing the E-Rate Management Services Agreement and declaring surplus items for sale or donation, showcasing the district’s efforts in fiscal management and community engagement. The board voted to surplus a 2010 Dodge Charger and allow the district to donate the vehicle to the Sallisaw School Police Department.
The board voted also to enter into an agreement with Rider Classroom Spanish, LLC, allowing them to provide distance learning Spanish instruction services for the upcoming school year.
