Lady Wolverines drop games in Big 8 Festival

It was a rough Thursday for the host Vian Lady Wolverines in the 2024 Big 8 Conference Festival, which took place at Armstrong Park.

The Lady Wolverines lost both of their games, falling 11-10 to Keys and 7-4 to Westville. Their third game was slated that night against Howe, but it was canceled.

In the loss to Keys, the Lady Cougars broke a 5-all tie with a six-run sixth inning to put them ahead 11-6.

The Lady Wolverines (0-3 at the end of the day) would not go away without a fight as they scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh inning to cut their deficit to 11-10 but the rally ended there. In defeat, Eden Girty was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in, Kala Gibbins was 2-for-4 with with a double and two runs scored, Halli Russell was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Scarlett Fields hit a solo home run for Vian.

Gibbins took the loss, fanning three batters in seven innings.

In the loss to Westville, a three-run third inning put the Lady Wolverines ahead 4-1, but the Lady Yellowjackets stung them for seven runs over the final three innings — a two-run fifth inning, a three-run sixth inning and a single run in the seventh inning.

In defeat, Gibbins was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, Russell was 2-for-4, Hanna Mattingly was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Rayleigh Terrill was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Gibbins (0-3 at day’s end) took the loss.
