Lady Diamonds lose home district game to Fort Gibson

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds had chances throughout Tuesday afternoon’s home District 4A-6 game against the visiting Fort Gibson Lady Tigers. However, the Lady Diamonds could not cash in the opportunities and lost 7-3.

The Lady Diamonds (1-6 overall, 0-6 in district play) stranded eight runners on base, with seven of those being in scoring position.

After the Lady Tigers (6-5, 2-3) scored once in the opening inning, they scored four runs in the second inning, two of them coming on a two-run home run by Kaiah Austin, to up their lead to 5-0 after two innings. A two-run fourth inning increased Fort Gibson’s advantage to 7-0 after four innings.

The Lady Diamonds finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth inning on Jaycie Cox’s one-out, RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-1 after six innings.

The Lady Diamonds tried to mount a two-out, seventh-inning rally. With two outs, Sydney Weedon singled, then scored on Channing Wilson’s RBI double to make it 7-2.

Wilson then scored compliments of Natalie Gonzalez’s RBI triple to cut the Fort Gibson lead to 7-3. However, Fort Gibson pitcher Karsen Pemberton got the next batter to fly out to center field to end the game.

In defeat, Cox was 2-for-3 with a run batted in, Wilson was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored and Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored for Sallisaw.

Delaney Compton (1-4) suffered the loss, despite recording three strikeouts in seven innings.
