Rough day for local teams at Westville Tournament

WESTVILLE — It was a rough Friday of softball for three local teams — Sallisaw, Vian and Gans — at the Westville Tournaments they went a collective 1-5 on the day.

The lone win came from the Lady Wolverines, who knocked off the county rival Lady Grizzlies 12-0 in the final game of the day after losing earlier 7-1 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah.

The Lady Diamonds went 0-2, losing 9-8 to the host Westville Lady Yellowjackets and falling 13-4 to Locust Grove.

The Lady Grizzlies lost their first game 14-1 to Colcord. In the Sallisaw loss to Westville, the Lady ’Jackets stung the Lady Diamonds with a four-run fifth inning to rally from an 8-5 deficit to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory. Three of Westville’s runs were unearned due to five Sallisaw errors.

In defeat, Sydney Weedon was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Delaney Compton was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in for the Lady Diamonds (1-8).

Compton (1-7) took the loss, despite fanning four batters in 4.1 innings.

In Sallisaw’s loss to Locust Grove, the Lady Pirates rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit with a four-run second inning and a seven-run third inning to take an 11-4 lead after three innings. A two-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.

In defeat, Jaycie Cox was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Channing Wilson doubled and scored once for Sallisaw.

Compton suffered the loss, as she struck out two batters in three innings. Madison Green got the final three outs of the game.

In Vian’s win over Gans, Vian pitcher Kala Gibbins (6-7) threw a one-hitter with eight Ks in three innings.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, the Lady Wolverines (6-7 put away the game with a nine-run second inning and a run in the third inning to put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Halli Russell was 3-for-3 with a double, a grand-slam home run, four RBIs and two runs scored, Eden Girty doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Rebel Simon doubled and scored once for Vian.

Abigail Leach singled for the only hit for the Lady Grizzlies (5-8). Maddie Freeman (22) suffered the loss, although she got a strikeout in 2.1 innings.

In Vian’s loss to Sequoyah- Tahlequah, after the Lady Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, the Lady Indians scored twice in the first inning, three runs in the fourth inning and twice more in the fifth inning to snatch away the win from the jaws of defeat.

In defeat, Rayleigh Terrill was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Simon doubled for Vian. Gibbins took the loss.

In Gans’ loss to Colcord, Colcord pitcher Elli Price threw a four-inning threehitter with seven Ks.

A five-run first inning by the Lady Hornets was all the run support Price needed. A threerun fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Gabbie Price was 2-for-3 with two triples and a run scored for Gans.

Leach (3-6) suffered the loss, going the first three innings with three strikeouts. Freeman went the final inning with a strikeout.
