Pirates look to rebound tonight at Chouteau-Mazie Wildcats

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Gore Pirates will look to rebound from last Friday night’s home-opening loss to Keys as they travel to meet the Chouteau-Mazie Wildcats at 7 tonight in Chouteau.

The Pirates (1-1) lost 27-22 last Friday night to the Cougars after Keys scored with 1:42 remaining in regulation after the Pirates had scored with 2:24 left in the final period.

After that game, Gore coach Brandon Ellis said there were a lot of miscues the Pirates made that helped the Cougars prevail, and he said that this week those issues have been addressed and being taken care of as the Pirates prepare for the ’Cats.

“We’ve really had a good three days of practice (Monday through Wednesday),” Ellis said. “I think the kids mentally are ready to get that taste out of their mouths (over the home-opener loss to Keys). We watched film briefly because they knew where we went wrong (against Keys). There was no reason to harp on that, so we went in there and quickly watched the film. The corrections were made, and we’re moving on.”

The Wildcats (0-1) lost their season opener last week on the road against the Kansas Comets by the score of 49-26. Ellis said the ’Cats like to play smashmouth football.

“They’re big and physical,” he said. “They play physical football. They do that kind of a wing-T. They don’t do anything fancy, but they’re just big and physical.”

Besides correcting the mistakes from last Friday night’s home-opening loss to Keys, Ellis said the Pirates just need to play Gore football to have the best shot at improving to 2-1 by the end of tonight.

“We just have to play assignment football,” said Ellis, whose Pirates will be healthy going into tonight’s contest. “We can’t have any turnovers. If we do that and we play our game — and not play against ourselves — I think we have a shot (to win).”
