Lady Diamonds lose district games to Checotah, Stigler

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds softball team suffered a pair of District 4A-6 losses, falling 14-3 at home to Checotah on Monday evening after losing a 12-0 road district contest to Stigler on Thursday.

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds softball team suffered a pair of District 4A-6 losses, falling 14-3 at home to Checotah on Monday evening after losing a 12-0 road district contest to Stigler on Thursday.

In the loss to Checotah, it truly was a pitcher’s duel between Checotah’s Hailey Prince and Sallisaw’s Delaney Compton, at least for a while.

Prince, who ended the night with 11 strikeouts, had a perfect game through 4.1 innings until a one-out walk to Natalie Gonzalez in the fifth inning, and a no-hitter through five innings until lead-off batter Sydney Weedon tripled to lead off the sixth inning.

Compton had a no-hitter through 3.2 innings, although the Lady Wildcats scored two unearned runs in the second inning.

However, the Lady ’Cats started making things happen in the fourth inning as they scored six runs for an 8-0 lead.

When Gonzalez walked with one out in the fifth inning, she ended up scoring the first run for the Lady Diamonds (2-15 overall, 0-10 in district play) on a throwing error by Checotah catcher Kami Hamm trying to pick her off at third base. Gonzalez’s run cut the Checotah lead to 8-1 after five innings, but that was as close as Sallisaw got.

The Lady Wildcats added six more runs in the sixth inning to put the game into run-rule status with a 14-1 lead.

The Lady Diamonds scored twice in the sixth inning on a wild pitch, scoring Weedon from third base after her triple, and Jaycie Cox’s two-out, RBI single, scoring Compton. However, the rally wasn’t enough to keep the game going into the seventh inning as the contest was stopped due to being in run-rule status.

In defeat, Weedon tripled and scored once, Madison Green singled and Cox hit an RBI single for Sallisaw. Compton (2-13) took the loss.

In the loss to Stigler, Stigler pitcher Cambry Cook pitched a four-inning two-hitter with three strikeouts.

The Lady Panthers scored once in the opening inning, six runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning — highlighted by Payton Mecom’s grand-slam home run — to put the game into run-rule status.

Green and Channing Wilson each singled for the only hits for Sallisaw.

Compton suffered the loss, going the first three innings. Green got the final two outs of the game.

The Lady Diamonds were slated to play in the two-day Inola Tournament, which was slated for Thursday and Friday, but will not.
