Undefeated Tulsa Regent Prep visits for Tigers’ homecoming game

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Central Tigers are hoping to make it a happy homecoming tonight when they entertain the undefeated Tulsa Regent Prep Rams at 7 tonight at Tiger Stadium.

Central coach Jeremy Thompson said his Tigers (2-2 overall, 1-0 in District AI-3 play), who have won two straight games, are primed and ready for the task at hand — and not focused as much on the preseason homecoming festivities.

“This is too big a game,” Thompson said. “Homecoming is homecoming, but this is a big district game. I feel that our guys’ minds are on the game. Homecoming is about football, so they’re definitely excited about homecoming. That’s a big deal for the kids, of course, but I feel like they’re focused on the job at hand that needs to be done.”

The Rams (4-0, 1-0) so far have ran the table — beating Haskell 49-18, Summit Christian 42-21, Morrison 26-18 and last week’s district opener 48-37 over Liberty. This could be the toughest test for the Tigers so far this season.

“They throw the ball really well,” Thompson said. “They throw the ball 90 percent of the time. Their quarterback is a good athlete. He’s also a good runner. He’s got weapons to throw it to. Their receiving corps does a good job. Offensive line wise, they’re pretty sound up front. With their offense, what they do, they do it well. Defensively, they get a lot of guys to the football. They came off 8-man last year and a 11-win season there (and a trip to the Class B state semifinals), so they’re continuing that success this year. They’re coming into our place 4-0. They are a good football team.”
