WEBBERS FALLS FOOTBALL

Warriors welcome Savanna to town tonight for homecoming

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Webbers Falls Warriors snapped out of their funk after winning a 40-34 road game over the Cave Springs Hornets.

Webber Falls coach Trent Holt believes if his team can beat tonight’s opponent, the Savanna Bulldogs, to enter District BII4 play Oct. 11 against Wilson (Henryetta) with a two-game winning streak, it will be big.

“Confidence is a major deal,” Holt said. “When you’re in a streak, that just helps your cause. You would rather not be on a losing streak going into district play. We’re getting ready to play Wilson (Henryetta) (in the District BII-4 opener on Oct. 11). They played Weleetka pretty good for a half, so that will be a tough one as well for us. We’re focusing on this one. it doesn’t mean anything more than on our record. It doesn’t have a bearing on playoff seeding or winning a state championship.”

The Bulldogs (1-2), who will be tonight’s 7 p.m. homecoming contest opponent at Smokey Cox Stadium, are on a two-game losing streak, losing 26-22 last week to Wetumka after falling 52-12 to Wilson (Henryetta) on Sept. 13. The Dawgs outlasted the Oklahoma Bible Academy Trojans 50-44 on Zero Week on Aug. 30.

“They’re new to us,” Holt said. On film, they pass the eye test. They have some good looking kids. The quarterback throws the ball decent. He runs it well. Their defensive line gets after it pretty good. They do a lot of formations. They throw a lot of stuff at you. We have to make sure we get lined up right. If we play well, it will be a good ball game.”

Holt said his offensive line must continue its improvement.

“The last couple off weeks, our offensive lines had problems picking up linebackers that stunt,” he said. “(Cave Springs) gave us a lot of problems the other night, and they did against Keota (on Sept. 20). We got a little bit better last week. We’re working on our combinations and being able to pick somebody up that’s coming in underneath the play or over the top. Our (offensive) line has been blocking pretty well, but we have to get our eyes up when we’re doing our double-teams (in blocking) so we can pick up the other guy that’s crashing in over the top or underneath. We just want to get better. That’s what we want to do, but we want to win.”

Another factor for the Warriors is dealing with the injury bug.

“I don’t know if (lineman) Dawson Littlefield is going to be able to play,” Holt said. “(Defensive lineman) Thadan Yandell played (against Cave Springs) with a broken hand. I don’t know about (running back/linebacker) Zane (Nolan). He’s still out with a nagging injury. (Running back/ linebacker) Dakota Moore is still out. (Lineman) Brock Rhoden is still out. We still have four or five who are hurt and really questionable.”
