GRIDIRON NOTES

Thursday night’s high school football games will be reported in Wednesday’s edition

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

I hope everyone has been or is getting to enjoy Fall Break this week.

I hope everyone has been or is getting to enjoy Fall Break this week.

Of course, you know what Fall Break means — Thursday Night Lights.

All of this week’s games were played Thursday.

Because of the press time of today’s edition being early Thursday afternoon, this sports section was printed about six hours prior to kickoff (about an hour before Webbers Falls’ home district game kicked off against Wesleyan Christian).

Thus, the game stories on the eight local games will publish in Wednesday’s edition.

We’ll be back to normal — assuming there is such a place — next week with Friday game previews in next Friday’s edition.

FOOTBALL ABUZZ IN GANS

With the arrival of new Gans Grizzlies football coach Gary Hixon, not only has there been a bit of enthusiasm within the program, but the town itself.

“One thing I’m so proud of where I’m at is that the community has bought in,” Hixon said. “We’ve had parents feed our kids before the ball games, and we’ve got a parent of one of our younger kids who’s going to feed our kids before we left Thursday (at noon) to go to Copan, and they’re going to turn around and send us snacks and feed us on the way back.”

The Grizzlies were hoping to get win No. 2 of the season and the first District BII-4 victory Thursday night at Copan. Hixon said the town of Gans is still supporting the Grizzlies.

“Even though we’re 1-5 (after last week’s district-opening loss to Arkoma last Friday night at Grizzly Field), I’m very pleased of the support that we’re getting from the town,” he said. “Other than the win-loss record, I’m very happy with where we are at.”

WHERE WAS JACKSON ARNOLD?

As I was watching last week’s Oklahoma-Texas game, if you were like me, you got to a point in the game — especially in the second half — as to why OU coach Brent Venables didn’t make a quarterback switch and go with Jackson Arnold, who started the season as the starting QB and was benched during the first-ever Southeastern Conference opener against former OU quarterback Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers on Sept. 21 at Owen Field in favor of Michael Hawkins Jr., who has been OU’s starting quarterback ever since.

When asked at halftime on ABC’s broadcast of the game by sideline reporter Laura Rutledge, Venables told her that Michael Hawkins Jr. was going to be his QB for the second half.

I rightfully don’t know if Arnold is in Venables’ dog house, but if things weren’t working with Hawkins Jr., I would have thought a veteran coach such as Venables would have made a change to Arnold just to see what kind of spark his presence back under center would have created.

I guess we’ll see when the Sooners return home to meet South Carolina at 11:45 a.m. Saturday if Hawkins Jr. will remain as OU’s quarterback or if Arnold will return — or even see any kind of playing time.
