District positioning on local teams’ agendas these last three weeks

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

District positioning for postseason play will be on the local teams’ agendas these last three weeks of the regular season.

District positioning for postseason play will be on the local teams’ agendas these last three weeks of the regular season.

If the playoffs would have started this week, here’s how things would have shaped up.

In District 4A-4, the Sallisaw Black Diamonds are in a three-way tie for second place with Poteau and Ada, both of whom have yet to play the Black Diamonds. The Black Diamonds and the Pirates will meet tonight at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium, then Sallisaw will visit Ada in the regularseason finale Nov. 8. Ada edged Poteau 19-14 earlier this season. Based on how things have gone to this point in district play, Sallisaw would be the fourth-place team as the tiebreakers currently favor Ada as the Cougars would be second and the Pirates third.

In District 3A-3, the Muldrow Bulldogs are currently in a four-way tie for fifth place, just missing out on the playoffs. That could change tonight for the ’Dogs with a district road victory over Tulsa Holland Hall, which currently is in fourth place.

The Vian Wolverines set atop District 2AII-4 after their homecoming win last week over the Henryetta Knights. About the only team standing in Vian’s way of a perfect district season and an unblemished regular season will be the Valliant Bulldogs on Senior Night on Nov. 8 at St. John Stadium as the ’Dogs and the Knights are a game behind. If Vian wins out, the district title will belong to the Wolverines. However, any stumbles along the way could jeopardize that.

In District 2AII-3, the Roland Rangers are tied for sixth with the Prague Red Devils, who will meet the Rangers on Nov. 1 in Prague. Despite the rough sledding for the Rangers, they are only a game back of being tied for fourth place, which has a tie with Heavener and Bethel — both of which defeated Roland. The Rangers truly need to win out, or at least win two of their last three games, to stand a shot a postseason play.

In District AII-3, Central is tied with Tulsa Regent Prep, which they defeated on homecoming — a game behind district-leading Talihina, which defeated Central earlier this month but has yet to meet Regent Prep.

The Gore Pirates are tied for fourth place with Liberty, which visits the Pirates tonight.

There will be a lot of playoff positioning up for grabs with these five teams.

In District BII-4, the Webbers Falls Warriors are tied with Arkoma for third place, with Gans and Wesleyan Christian a game behind. The Warriors and the Mustangs will play Nov. 1 in Arkoma.

Copan, which entertains Webbers Falls tonight, and Wilson (Henryetta), which visits Gans tonight, are tied for first place.

We’ll see how it all unfolds as we progress through Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of the 2024 high school football regular season.
