Vian Choir members compete at district regionals

Vian Public School’s high school choir members competed at district regionals at Muskogee High School on Sept. 21.

Vian Public School’s high school choir members competed at district regionals at Muskogee High School on Sept. 21.

Zayley Cheater, Alyssa Lee, Rayken Massey, and Anthony Ruda were selected for the EDHC prestigious honor choir, where three were ranked in the Top 10 for the district region. Massey ranked third for Soprano 1, Ruda ranked third for Tenor 1, and Cheater was ranked seventh for Soprano 1 as well. The students represented Vian at the Eastern District Honor Regional Choir on Oct. 15.

On the day of rehearsals for the concert, Cheater auditioned and was selected for a solo on the African piece, Tshela Moya, and Ruda was selected to accompany the choir on the djembe, which is an African Drum. Massey also auditioned and was selected to accompany the choir playing the shekere, which is a gourd with beads which is an African percussion instrument.

Cheater was honored the night of the concert by Vian Choir Director Christina Howard-Herriman for being selected six years in a row for the Eastern District Honor Choir, and was presented with a medal for her years of distinguished performances.

“There were a total of 25 schools represented at the district regional level. It was amazing to see three Vian students that were selected for special solos at the concert. It was an amazing concert. The video was uploaded to the Vian Choir Facebook page. I encourage everyone to go watch the video in its entirety. It was a magical night of music and the kids performed beautifully!” Howard-Herriman said.

“The Vian Choir’s Facebook page is updated regularly with performance and contest information. The next contest is All-State which is in November. The students have been rehearsing since June and are ready to compete. I’m hoping for another successful year of learning and competition. I appreciate the community and their support of these talented students and I know the students do as well,” she said.
