Senior duo glad to beat Poteau, emotional about Senior Night

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

Sallisaw senior football players Max Sparks and Connor Green were both among the many teammates, coaches and fans that were glad the Black Diamonds ended their eight-game losing streak to the Poteau Pirates last Friday night at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.

“It was just awesome,” Sparks said. “It was a long time coming. We were ready.”

Even though Green has spent the last couple of years as a Central Tiger, getting to return to the Black Diamonds in the season they knock off the Pirates was special.

“It was a big win,” Green said. “It was a good win.

It was a great feeling. It finally felt good to beat those guys. It was a good win for the program.”

Green said his transition back to being a Sallisaw Black Diamond after his couple of years as a Central Tiger has been a relatively simple one.

“It’s been amazing,” Green said. “I’ve felt very welcome. It feels like I never left. It’s back home. It feels great.”

However, the season must go on, and the Black Diamonds will entertain the Stilwell Indians tonight for Senior Night for the senior football players, trainers, cheerleaders and band members prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.

“It’s the last guaranteed home game out there,” Green said. “You have to leave it all out there and give it all you have. We have to work to get a home playoff game.”

“The season has flown by so far,” Sparks said. “It’s going to be very emotional. It’s our last secured home game, which we may have more whenever we have our home playoff games.”

The senior season itself is beginning its stretch drive for both seniors.

“I’m trying to take it all in and enjoy every single moment of it,” Green said. “It goes by fast.”

“Really, just the same stuff as Connor said — I’m trying to take it all in while it lasts,” Sparks said.
