Vian welcomes Morris to town tonight
After an emotional Week 7 homecoming win over the Henryetta Knights, there was a chance at a letdown last week for the Vian Wolverines when they took on the host and winless Wilburton Diggers. For the most part, that did not happen as the Wolverines left town victorious, thanks to a 35-point first quarter.
“We came out pretty well,” Vian coach Gary Willis said. “There’s things you can see on film where we were not on top of our game, but we were able to play well enough to jump out on them.”
Now, the Wolverines (8-0 overall, 5-0 in District 2AII4 play) will face another winless team in the Morris Eagles (0-8, 0-5) at 7 tonight at St. John Stadium.
Willis believes his team will not be looking ahead to next week’s Senior Night game against the Valliant Bulldogs (4-4. 4-1), which likely will be for the district title.
“We talked to the boys about what our main goals are,” he said. “I think we’re past the maturity level in coming out too flat.”
So far this season, the Eagles have been outscored 349-68. Willis said the Eagles are going through a youth movement right now.
“I’ve known (Morris) Coach (Bobo) Daniels for 15 to 20 years,” Willis said. “He’s a very good coach. They’re just down right now, and Coach Daniels knows it. He does a great job on the defensive side of the football. He’s a 4-3 defense guy. I expect him to stay in it. They’re one of the better-coached teams on defense in our district. They’re just down, athletes wise. They’re very coached up. They do what they’re supposed to do very well from a mental standpoint. His team is just young and don’t have a lot of talent right now.”
The main thing for the Wolverines to have success tonight is to play at a high level.
“We need to play at a high intensity level and do our assignments so that when we watch film and grade, we’re grading out in the 80s and 90s (percent),” Willis said. “We need to make sure everybody is doing their job.”
The Wolverines will enter tonight’s game healthy. “That’s a big plus right now,” Willis said. Tonight will be a special night as former player Richard Jordan will have his jersey retired.
