District STAR Events were held at the ICTC Muskogee campus on Nov. 12 with 19 chapters from Northeast District 5 in attendance. Members of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America were given the opportunity to compete in the first round of competitions called STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition.)

Among eight different categories to choose from, the Sallisaw Chapter brought six different individuals or teams all vying for a spot placing in the top three. First-time members, Hudson Ruark and Joshua Dean competed in Creed Speaking and Interpretation. In this event, they were to recite the FCCLA Creed and endure a Q&A portion. Hudson placed first in level 1 while Josh placed second in level 2, both earning gold scores.

Emerson Meredith and Naiya Patel teamed up in Repurpose and Redesign Level 1, placing third and earning gold scores as well. Their project was called “Don’t Trash the Glass” where they took glass jars, redesigned them, creating a new purpose for the glass. Miriam Burmaster and Ben Williams also competed in the Level 2 of Repurpose and Redesign event earning third place with gold scores. Their project called “Coatboard” was an innovative and sustainable way to turn an old skateboard into a wall hanging coat rack.

First-time officers, Clae Stilwell and Sophia Teague couldn’t wait to join the competitive team as well. Clae competed in Professional Presentation Level 2 placing second. His presentation, “Curves, Color, Cut!” was using an apron he constructed himself to show the examples of the elements of design for students in Mrs. Bennett’s classes. Sophia Teague competed in the Career Investigation portfolio project, earning first place with gold scores.

Students advancing to the Region round are Hudson Ruark, Joshua Dean, and Sophia Teague. They will compete in their categories on Jan. 30, 2025, along with their fellow Sallisaw FCCLA competitive teammates.
