Wolverines in state semifinals tonight against Colcord at Wagoner

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

When anyone thinks of the phrase, “Final Four,” the first thought is college basketball and the national semifinals, both men and women — which is part of “March Madness.”

However, the phrase “Final Four” also applies to the Vian Wolverines, who will be in one of the two Class 2A, Division II semifinals against the Colcord Hornets at 7 tonight at Wagoner.

The Wolverines (12-0) kept their record unblemished with a 35-7 win over the Beggs Golden Demons last Friday night at the home finale for Vian at St. John Stadium, and propelled them to the state semifinals for the first time since 2019, when that season ended with a 35-7 Class 2A state semifinal loss to the Kingston Redskins — who were knocked out of the Class 2A, Division I playoffs last week as Marlow beat them 27-21 in the state quarterfinals.

The Hornets (11-1) have only tasted defeat once this season, losing to Adair 28-19 on Oct. 17. Since then, the Hornets have won five straight games — including stunning previously undefeated Holdenville 36-14 in last week’s Class 2A, Division II state quarterfinals.

So far this season, the Hornets have outscored their opponents 468-115, including three shutouts. Colcord has scored at least 30 or more points in nine of its 12 games this season, including four wins in which the Hornets scored 40-plus points and three wins in which they eclipsed the 50-point mark.

The winner of tonight’s state semifinal game will meet the winner of tonight’s other state semifinal game between Davis and Stroud, which is being played at Noble.

The Class 2A, Division II state championship game will take place at 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Chad Richison Stadium in Edmond.

See the updated Class 2A-II Tournament Bracket on Page 3.
