Michael Stevens’ New Year’s resolution has a deeper motivation. Last year, his father passed away from heart problems, leaving a lasting impression on him about the importance of health.

“Dad was always putting things off—his doctor appointments, eating better, all of it,” he recalls. “By the time he wanted to make changes, it was too late.”

Now a grandfather to two young boys, Stevens wants to be around to see them grow up— and to set a good example.

“I want them to see that taking care of yourself matters,” he says. “It’s not just about living longer; it’s about living better.”

His plan started small: a new pair of walking shoes and a promise to Buddy to get outside daily.

“Buddy’s always been ready to go for a walk, but last year, life just got in the way,” he says, glancing at his enthusiastic companion. “This year, I’m making it a priority—for him, me, and my family.”

He’s also exploring areas around the Arkansas River and discovering parks in the area to keep their routine interesting.

“There are so many great places nearby that we’ve never been to,” he says. “It’s like a new adventure every day.”

Buddy, always eager for a stroll, can sense the shift.

“As soon as I grab the leash, he’s at the door, ready to go,” he says with a chuckle. “His excitement makes it hard to skip a day.”

These walks are more than just exercise for Stevens—they’re moments of reflection and connection.

“It gives me time to clear my head and think about what really matters,” he explains. “And it’s a chance to slow down and enjoy life, even if it’s just for an hour.”

His family has noticed the change, especially his grandsons.

“They’ve asked to join me and Buddy on some of our walks,” he says proudly. “It feels good to know I’m setting an example for them, and it’s become something we can share together.”

As the new year unfolds, Stevens is optimistic about the path ahead—both figuratively and literally.

“It’s not about perfection or big changes,” he says. “It’s about being consistent, staying healthy, and making time for the things that matter most.”

Buddy, of course, is thrilled with this resolution, eagerly leading the way on every walk. s what matters most.
